Chris Somers is one of the hardest-working and unfathomably busy individuals in Cork city today: having served time in a succession of guitar outfits, recent years have seen him expand his horizons into event curation with PLUGD Records, visual art, scoring for theatre and an increasingly busy sound-engineering schedule.

New music was never going to be far behind, though, and this week, Somers has released a new single from his African Fiction solo project, entitled ‘Heat’, a muscular eight-minute exercise built on a seemingly unswerving rhythm that rises and swells with noise, allowing intermittent glimmers of melody.

Somers’ new single is accompanied by visuals from Cork artist and musician David Mathúna (Not Earth), continuing an extended musical collaboration that also takes in their mutual involvement in live improv techno outfit Bhailiú. Streaming below.

African Fiction supports Robedoor in Dublin on Friday at Jigsaw, sharing the bill with Davy Kehoe; and surfaces at the Roundy in Cork on the 21st, alongside Lolz (GASH Collective) and GYM (Plugd). Somers and Mathúna’s collaborative project Bhailiú plays The Village Hall in Cork on Saturday evening as part of IndieCork festival.
