Anderson released Patterns, a beguiling debut album last September, with influences from late 60s pop and early 70s singer-songwriting.

Prior to the release, Anderson teamed up with Colm Russell on the ‘History’ video and a video in which they went door to door in his neighbourhood to drum up support for his music directly.

Russell has form in making superb jaunty music videos.

His new video for ‘Existential Vacuum’ features a host of characters reciting the song’s lyrics in different pleasing to watch situations. Featuring TV3’s Martin King pointing out The Existential Vacuum on his weather map.

After his time with the indie-rock band The Rags came to an end, Daniel Anderson found himself at a junction: give up the dream, go back to labouring on building sites or pursue the musical muse.

In a way, Anderson did both. Granted a plot of land, he put his physical skills to work to serve his creative brain, and built a studio so he could give himself the the time to explore a new sound.

That industry is in evidence in the video that was shared a lot this week where Daniel sells his self-produced, played and arranged record door to door.

Patterns is immersed in classic orchestral band arrangements with nods to late 60s pop and early 70s singer-songwriters. Anderson’s voice has an old-fashioned earnest delivery to it that matches this classic-style.

Highlights include the nostalgic ‘History’ (which was introduced with a family VHS video), the jaunty title track, the edifying storytelling song ‘Vincent’ and the beguiling Beatles-esque ‘Cecilia’s Sister’.

Patterns is one of the best Irish records released this year, toiled over in more ways than one.

Buy the album direct from Anderson.

Live dates:
Tonight – free in Abner Brown’s
Saturday – Tower Records – 1pm
October 9th – Cork Coughlans
October 16th – Dublin Dublin Unitarian Church Ireland

This Friday, Anderson will release his debut album Patterns of lush folk and singer-songwriter music, which was self-recorded and arranged in a studio he built himself in the back of his garden.

Artists these days often resort to crowdfunding their album releases but Anderson has the album done and dusted, so he decided to go door to door in Dublin to try and sell the album to the public direct. The result is a very entertaining 8 minutes. Video by Colm O’Russell, who also made the great ‘History’ video below.

My fellow Irish music blogger and Newbridge man Barry Gruff has put together GruffWuff, a 19-track compilation of new and unreleased music to celebrate his 5 years writing about music on his blog.

GruffWuff features music from Anderson, SertOne, Oh Boland, Monto, The Expert, Captain Moonlight, Knoxville Morning and more. It’s a good overview of the kind of music Barry likes. He has a predilection for ’90s-sounding indie and alternative music with an emphasis on Welsh music so that explains the addition of Mr Huw. Here’s to another 5 years!

“Initially I thought an idea like this was just a pipe dream but the enthusiasm that met my initial inquiries bowled me over, I couldn’t believe how eager everyone was to get involved. Blogging has become quite a big part of my life over the past number of years and I wanted to do something really special to mark the occasion, and I think with ‘GruffWuff’, that has been achieved”. Adding “It’s been curated and compiled by myself and Stephen Connelly. The thinking behind the project was pretty simple; we wanted to shine a light, brief as it may be, on some of the acts that have lit up the blog over the past few years.”

GruffWuff is out now on Bandcamp for name your price fee.
