Benji B’s radio show, as I often enthuse around these parts, is a regular show I try to delve into every week – taking in hip-hop, dance, electronic, house, grime and general underground club tracks.

Most weeks he has a guest of some kind whether in the studio or in the mix. This week’s is Thom Yorke of Radiohead who joins Benji and plays some favourite tracks as a co-presenter over three hours. The pair play back to back for the entire duration and play a lot of tunes including music from Burial, Girl Band, Liquid Liquid, James Blake, Vince Staples, Abul Mogard and Dilla in there.

Of Girl Band’s ‘Paul’, Yorke said it was his and his son’s favourite music (about 35 minutes in). They are from Dublin Thom not Belfast.

Last week, my favourite radio DJ Benji B’s had a Soundtrack Special where he indulged us in the records in his soundtrack crate including music from composers like Ennio Morricone (timely as he’s playing here this weekend), Cliff Martinez, John Barry, Bernard Herrmann, Vangelis, Giorgio Moroder, Chromatics, Angelo Badalamenti, Jon Brion and more. Films included Taxi Driver, Akira, Wildstyle, Paris, Texas, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Rocky, Drive, Bladerunner, The Taking of Pelham 123 and From Russia With Love. It was mega.

You can listen to the whole show here til Thursday but in case you don’t get to listen til after, you can listen to a Spotify playlist below of all his selections. One track I’d add in there is ‘Nique La Police’ from the La Haine soundtrack. What are your favourite unknown soundtrack tracks?

While Benji B took a break from his show this week, Brainfeeder label artists stepped in and delivered a collection of live and DJ sets for the duration of the show. We get sets from Flying Lotus (two in fact – DJ & live band), Teebs, Samiyam, Tokimonsta, Austin Peralta and Matthew David. The show was recorded in Fly Lo’s house. You can listen to it at BBC player for the next five days or download it from Core News.

The Jamie xx remixes and mixes keep coming. The second tune from Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx’s We’re New Here. ‘I’ll Take Care Of U’ has Gil going for it over a piano-house beat. That album is released February 21st UK and 22nd in the US so presumably 18th in Ireland (album releases are always the Friday before here).

Jamie xx also provided a stonking mix for Benji B’s BBC Radio One Takeover last night with a 27 minute mix of tunes from Zomby, another man of the moment James Blake, Jamie Woon, Mount Kimbie, Jamie’s mashup of The Knife’s ‘Pass This On’ called ‘Far Nearer’, Beach House, Lumidee, his Adele remix and another track from We’re New Here. Thanks to Hypetrak and Pinglewood for the audio.

benji A quick heads up to fans of head-nodding beatmakers, hip-hop, soul and proper R&B, Radio 1Xtra DJ Benji B is DJing in Solas, Wexford Street tonight from 8:30pm. It’s FREE in. I’ve only been tuned into his show for the last few months really but he always plays a great mix of the above. Stuff like Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Sa-Ra, J Dilla, Madlib, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Bullion and Joker always gets a run out.

His Radio page is here (listen to the latest show) and his Deviation blog is here.

Here’s a tune he’s been playing lately out on Hyperdub on July 24th:
