Jon Hopkins has just released a solo career highlight with Immunity, an album of minutely constructed minimalist maximalist techno. You can see him live at Body & Soul on Sunday night at 11.45pm at the Midnight Circus. Below you’ll find a Spotify playlist of tunes collated from the various answers, also below, Jon gave me about songs that inspired Immunity, his favourite remix of the year, a sad song he loves, an album he’s been recommending others and much more… Jon Hopkins playlist →
Darkstar’s second album News From Nowhere was released on Warp Records a couple of weeks ago and their brand of cerebral electronica further moves into a warmer places, exuding a closeness not previously heard. They’re playing Button Factory this Friday (win tickets below) and James Young (that’s him on the left) told me some of his favourite songs recently. He’s clearly a good man as he choose ‘Temporary Secretary’ among his choices which also include Girl Band’s Blawan cover.
What three songs/albums from other artists inspired your new album?
Darkstar hopped from the eminent Hyperdub label to the legacy-laden Warp Records this year for their forthcoming album News From Nowhere (due February 2013). ‘Timeaway’ was a sidestep from the the band’s debut North. The new single ‘Amplified Ease’ however appears to be picking up the baton from the Merriweather Post-Pavilion era of Animal Collective before they went off to make queasy psychedelia. I love the mantric live version performed at The Asylum in London above but you can also hear the bouncier studio version below. Darkstar play The Button Factory on February 22nd. (more…)
Darkstar’s video for the lead single ‘Gold’ from October 18th release-dated Hyperdub debut North will come as a surprise to those like me who fell for the the gentle bump of ‘Aidy’s Girl Is a Computer’. The result is closer to Hot Chip if they actually made tunes in the dark and were a little bit depressed. The tune is actually a cover of The Human League’s ‘You Remind Me of Gold’. I like.
After some conversations with friends about dubstep recently, I thought I’d put up some tunes from last year to serve as a catchup/beginners guide to the genre and its surrounds. I’m by no means an expert but over the next two pages you’ll find my favourites from Burial, Zomby, Joker, Peverelist, Benga, Skream, Samiyam, Darkstar, 2000F, Joy Orbison, King Midas Sound, Kode 9, Guido and more.
Please put your own must-listens in the comments.
Burial (with Four Tet)
Enigmatic dubstepper Burial and electronic experimentaller Four Tet combined on a 12″ last year which had two tracks at 18 minutes in length total. ‘Moth’ was the standout track of the two (the other being ‘Wolf Cub’). Perfectly combining Four Tet’s ability to chop up percussion samples in inventive ways with Burial’s ability to produce some growling yet almost supernatural sub-bass. (more…)
