Patrick O’Laoghaire is currently recording some new music in Berlin for upcoming I Have A Tribe releases but we don’t have to wait any longer to hear some of it.

‘After We Meet’ is a song from his debut album Beneath A Yellow Moon last year in re-recorded form and it feels like a fresh start, a song which takes I Have A Tribe’s balladeering piano approach and imbues it with some light and bright sonic textures, a smooth bassline and vocals from May Kay. It’s an improvement and you can hear it in a new video by Myles O’Reilly.

I Have A Tribe plays Whelan’s on Friday March 3rd.

Patrick O’Laoghaire, I Have A Tribe released his debut album Beneath A Yellow Moon this year and it confirmed him as one of Ireland’s most interesting singer-songwriters. His piano-set compositions are emotionally drawn and imbued with classic songwriting touches.

‘Cuckoo’ is the closing track from the album and here Myles O’Reilly films it live in Berlin.

Patrick is on tour in Europe over the next month.

I Have A Tribe’s Patrick O’Laoghaire is approaching the release of his debut album Beneath A Yellow Moon next month on May 27th through Groenland Records, and with each passing song and performance, his stature is growing, as he showed us in the Co-Op earleir this month.

‘Buddy Holly’, from the record is an emotive song that was born 8 years ago and finished in time for the album. The title comes from the song intro’s similarity to this Buddy Holly tune.

The video was made by Myles O’Reilly and features Donal Dineen, Mick Minogue and Steve O’Connor sending Patrick on his way with a nice wee homemade vehicle.

On Saturday April 16th, I am putting on a gig as part of Musictown, the festival celebrating music talent and culture in the capital of all genres by Dublin City Council.

It’ll be a part of the Minimum Maximum series of special events in unique spaces and it will take place in the Dublin Food Co-Op in Newmarket Square, Dublin 8 (previous places have included Monster Truck Gallery, Block T and Wood Quay Amphitheatre).

On the night, there will be a lineup Irish emerging talent and established artists featuring:

David Kitt, I Have A Tribe, AE Mak and more.

Following his nationwide solo tour that included a sold out Whelan’s date, David Kitt will be playing songs from his revered albums past along with new ones from his forthcoming seventh album due this year. Patrick O’Laoghaire’s piano-based missives under the I Have A Tribe name brim with emotion, honesty and storytelling. New duo AE Mak, Aoife McCann and Ellie McMahon are influenced by tUnE-yArDs and Anita O’Day and perform with an emphasis on rhythmic vocal lines and harmonies. More artists to be confirmed.

The event is BYOB. Early bird tickets are sold out but late birds are on sale now priced at €20+.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been compiling an up to date playlist of modern Irish music to celebrate and coincide with St. Patrick’s Day.

This year, I wanted to do something more to date and to roll it out across the year to coincide also with my weekly Irish Times column of new Irish music and as a companion to the general New Music playlist.

So today, I’m launching my New Irish Music weekly playlist which will be regularly updated. Because Irish music isn’t just for Paddy’s Day.

Join over 500 other listeners for fresh listens to new Irish music. There are songs from artists who have received support from Nialler9 in the last year or so from Brian Deady, Shit Robot, Roisin Murphy, Burnt Out, Saint Sister, I Have A Tribe, Le Galaxie, Rusangano Family, Come On Live Long, Daithi, Jape, Bitch Falcon, Pleasure Beach and many more.

The focus is on Irish music happening now, emerging and trending. I want this to be the definitive collection of new Irish music throughout the year in one place which I’ll be featuring as it comes on the site. Subscribe below.

Kanye West

Ultralight Beam

He’s possibly unravelling but he’s capable of suspending disbelief in more than on way.

Let’s call it. The release of The Life Of Pablo (Swish, Waves, whatever) was one of the most infuriating things to have experienced in a long time for any release. The impression of an album with no restrictions or deadlines felt amateur; at best, a sympathetic look into an artist’s process which they are never finished tinkering with.

Then that Bill Cosby tweet. It was the last straw for many, including me. I wasn’t going to listen to this irritating egomaniac anymore.

But of course, once TLOP dropped, I did. Curiosity got the better of me. The album is largely a mess, with Kanye’s words finding less meaning and substance than ever before (why rap about your wife’s ex when you’ve just had two kids?) but what redeems a listen to any Kanye album is his executive production, which is always interesting to hear how he weaves the ideas of multiple producers into one song. It’s conflicting to enjoy any of it still.

I watched SNL as I do every week. The performance of ‘Ultralight Beam’ shone regardless. The gospel choir add some magic but it’s Chance The Rapper (one of the greatest new artists of the last five years) who lifts the performance and brings a new raptured energy to Kanye’s music, as his own state seems to crumble around him.

Hear the song on Tidal.

The Introduction

Dilla’s lost album gets a release date

Three years on from the news, and a week on from the 10th year since he passed, it was announced that Nas’ Mass Appeal label will finally release the album in conjunction with Dilla’s Estate as PayJay. To be released on April 15th, 14 years after it was originally scheduled to come out ( the album was literally shelved and Dilla moved to LA where he made his name), The Diary features ‘Diamonds’, ‘Ice’, ‘Fuck The Police’ and ‘Trucks’.

‘The Introduction’ is the first song from it, produced by House Shoes with Dilla, is a wavy synth stomper.

Over three days and nights in Cork the Sounds From A Safe Harbour’s programme took hold in the venues of the city that saw the likes of Lisa Hannigan, Wild Beasts, The National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner, Richard Reed Parry, Crash Ensemble and many more contemporary artists play shows in a new festival put together by Mary Hickson of the Cork Opera House and curated by Bryce Dessner.

It was a superb first year, with bonded warehouse food, cocktail bars, gigs and talks; exhibitions and screenings and an attendance that further suggested Cork was more than ready for this unique style of contemporary/classical yet alternative-leaning festival to dock in the city.

As part of the whole experience, I curated a free music trail around 5 pubs/venues in the city including Crane Lane, Bodega, The Oval, Poor Relation and BDSM which featured shows from My Brightest Diamond, I Am The Cosmos, Rusangano Family, Bantum, Shookrah, This Is The Kit, I Have A Tribe, Katharine Phillippa, Somerville, Quiet River Of Dust, Slow Skies, Loah, Conor Walsh, Deady, Adultrock, Talos and more.

If you missed out, here’s flavour of the weekend through the lens of Bríd O’Donovan. Here’s to the hope of the return of the festival next year. Thanks Mary, Bryce and Cork for having me too.

The Irish often think of themselves as underdogs but time and time again, we prove ourselves on a world stage. Right now, the Irish are making a splash. Nialler9 talked to Jape, Fight Like Apes, Florence Olivier, I Have A Tribe, Overhead The Albatross and more down at Castlepalooza Music Festival for Vodafone Centre Stage about how and why Irish music is having a moment.

Patrick O’Laoghaire, I Have A Tribe, has returned with a new track to follow up his debut EP from last year.

‘Scandinavia’ feels like a song that’s been revealed as written in a letter, a confessional late-night whisper with O’Laoghaire resolving his own mortality and existence.

The song was recorded in Villagers’ Conor O’Brien’s house and it also features the vocals and additional instrumentation of O’Brien along with Ber Quinn, who also recorded the session.

“We found a day where all three of us could sit together in Conor’s place. At some stage we began to play, and Ber hit record. When he stopped the tape we had a song.” – O’Laoghaire
