Loose Joints is new podcast hosted by Nialler9 and Sally Cinnamon talking to people about the music they love: old and new.

For number three we are joined by Emmet Kirwan, actor and writer. You might know him from his brilliant stage show Dublin Old School, Just Saying or most recently Thisispopbaby’s RIOT show at the Fringe.

Our musical selection is banger-heavy and our chat takes in losing your hearing in Ibiza, your ideal funeral songs, we agonise over our guilty pleasure choices and Emmet explains the appeal of Mark Morrison’s Get Horny,  Sally explains the torrid appeal of “the mortify human saveloy that is Simply Red” and backbreakers.

Having been known for a harder-edged form of dance music, Lil Silva’s new EP, Mabel, will be a surprise to many as it eschews the sound he deployed on records for Night Slugs in favour of a gentle sonic space that is somewhere between R&B, pop and the xx-style indie dynamics.

24-year-old TJ Carter’s 2013 EP, Distance, also removed himself for the club with more chilled passages featuring Sampha and Rosie Lowe but the Mabel EP is almost completely devoid of regular club sounds (instrumental opener ‘First Mark’ has a grimey melody line), preferring a vocal and synth-lead action that’s closer to his previous collaborator Sampha. The sweet title track is about his grandmother.

A new voices appears twice, one of Lil Silva’s most prominent muse, Banks. Their partnerships started with the EP track ‘Work’ and has continued Banks’ debut album where Lil Silva provided the shuddering backdrop for the title track and is the album’s main producer.

On the EP, ‘Right For You’ sticks closer to the early Banks template with the pair duetting, while ‘Don’t You Love’, a sweet melodic hypnotic turn with jagged edges sounding the most well-rounded and complete vision of the pair working together on Silva’s terms.

Listen to the EP on Spotify.

Tracks of the Week playlist

1. Death From Above 1979 – ‘Trainwreck 1979′

The Toronto dance-punk duo return with a new single and album The Physical World, their second, ten years after their debut You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine.

2. Jessie Ware – ‘Tough Love’ (Cyril Hahn remix)

Jessie Ware’s comeback single ‘Tough Love’ is proof that Ms. Ware is more interested in creating great R&B songs, smooth pop song for adults. Enter Cyril Hahn then, to give the track that dance verve.

3. Juce! – ‘Burning Up’

London girl trio Juce! are clearly all about the funky summer jams. On their recent tracks ‘Call You Out’ and ‘(H)ours’ they’ve proved that and their new track ‘Burning Up’ tightens up tighter to the synth-funk pop beat.

4. Royal Blood – ‘Figure It Out’

Thrilling rock track from the Brighton duo’s forthcoming self-titled debut album out in August 23rd. Supporting Arctic Monkeys in Marlay Park. Great new video for the song too:

5. Revin Goff – ‘Salthill’

Spooky James Blake-esque vibes from a 23 year-old Galway producer.

6. Augustus and John – ‘Crosslines’

Mike Smalle of Cane141 and B-Movie Lightning is back with a new collaborative project with Italian producer and musician Matteo Grassi. This is the title track from the new EP, inspired by “electronic music, film soundtracks and ambient soundscapes”.

7. REID – ‘Fractures’ (Feat. Slow Skies)

TDublin-based Cork producer REID is back with a new EP and the release is being trailed by ‘Fractures’, a track with a head-spinning night-time European electronic feel with nods to Gold Panda and vocals by Slow Skies aka Karen Sheridan.

8. Saint Pepsi – ‘Fiona Coyne’

Having made his name with some brisk and sample-formed bedroom electronica, Ryan DeRobertis aka Long Island’s Saint Pepsi has turned his established sound into something that more closely resembles Toro Y Moi making bright funky pop music.

9. Lil Silva – ‘Mabel’

From TJ Carter’s new EP on Good Years, which will feature two songs from Banks, this is the title track about his grandmother, which touches on the xx vibes.

10. King avriel – ‘180’

The 23 year-old singer from LA has been working on her debut album thesis. Promising R&B music.
