The Nialler9 radio show airs live every Thursday night from 10pm to Midnight on 105.2FM TXFM. TXFM will close some time this year but the show continues until further notice. Like this website, it’s a new music show featuring myself presenting my favourite tunes.

Two years ago, I ran a series of guest posts from people involved in Irish music featuring their top 5 Irish acts at that moment. This time around, I thought I’d shift the focus to international and ask a similar question – “Who are your top 5 new artists of 2011?”. Kicking off today and running into next week, musicians, bloggers, record shop owners, journalists, bookers and radio presenters will be answering that question.
By the end of next week, we’ll have a ton of music recommendations featuring the best new bands from around the world for all to discover, especially if you don’t read music blogs regularly.
I introduced Michael Kiwanuka as 23 year-old soulful Londoner who channels the voice of Bill Withers back in April and he’s releasing a new four-track EP – I’m Getting Ready in September. So much soul in that voice.
You may have noticed how Irish film-makers have produced brilliant video work of late. The likes of Myles O’Reilly, Stephen Mogerley, Fergal Brennan, Tiny Ark, Greg Corcoran and more have all been featured here recently and I wrote a piece about them for Day And Night.
Michael Kiwanuka is a 23 year-old soulful Londoner who has been supporting Adele on tour of late and just happens to sound like Bill Withers (and has covered him too). ‘Tell Me A Tale’ was produced by Paul Butler of The Bees, a band who know a thing or two about perfecting vintage sounds.
Kiwanuka’s debut EP is released through Communion in June. We could be looking at a new star here.
