Autre Monde are a new band formed from a lot of Dublin-based indie pop bands associated with Popical Island, which is currently in hibernation mode.
Featuring Paddy Hanna on vocals, Mark Chester on guitar (Ginnels), Padraig Cooney on bass (Skelocrats, Tieranniesaur) and Eoghan O’Brien on drums (No Monster Club), their new band is inspired by “an early Brian Eno, John Cale plus post-punk kind of seam,” with references to ESG, Television, Suicide, The Slits and Pere Ubu.
The band’s first song, recorded with Daniel Fox of Girl Band, ‘Customs’ is a delight of loose rock proportions. In other words, it’s a lovely jam.
Having recently revealed some of the smaller goings on at the festival on the grounds of Ballinlough Castle including Wonderlust, Myles O’Reilly’s Arbutus Yarns Theatre, Body Holidays 1970’s style holiday camp, Pagoda Stage, Port Royal Jamaican village and more, today Body & Soul revealed Tree Haus, a new stage curated by Homebeat for the festival on the summer solstice weekend of June 19th to 21st.
Focusing on the best of contemporary Irish music and culture, you can expect performances from My Tribe Your Tribe, Buffalo Woman, Carriages, Planet Parade, Liza Flume, Ghosts, Slowplacelikehome, Hilary Woods, Skelocrats, Little Xs For Eyes, Elephant, Hare Squead, Bantum, Nubus, Justin Grounds & Pearse McGloughlin (Idiot Songs), Sea Legs (Ciaran Lavery x Ryan Vail), Hare Squead, Nova Collective, Feather and Ben Bix, Participant, I Have A Tribe, Nubus, Margie Lewis, SignA, Idiot Songs, Skelocrats, Tomorrows, Taste DJs, Somadrone, Lyttet, Leo Drezden and Lasertom.
Also featuring on that stage, kicking off the Saturday and Sunday will be Vinyl Love, where DJs and musicians alike will be playing selections from their 7″ collection.
Skelocrats will return with a new album Bella Bella later this month with a stronger melodic swing to their music. In January ‘Lyin’ Eyes‘ gave us our first preview and ‘Zirconium Heart’ further cements it which the band say is akin “new-wavey robo-pop that manages to evoke both Talking Heads and a Eurovision entry from another dimension”.
Bobby Aherne of No Monster Club, who himself had an excellent video yesterday made a video for the track which centres on a lo-fi robot/human Blind-Date style TV show.
17th April, Bello Bar, Dublin (Bella Bella launch party with Ginnels and Switzerland)
9th May, Sweeney’s, Dublin w/ Cruising and Cave Ghosts
14th May, Roisin Dubh, Galway w/ Paddy Hanna
The Popical Island band Skelocrats will return with a new album. The band, made up of Land Lovers’ Padraig Cooney, Grand Pocket Orchestra’s Bronwyn Murphy-White and Paddy Hanna, Groom’s Michael Stevens will release an album Bella Bella in March and the excellent ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ is a Belle And Sebastian-style indie track that suggests the band have something great on the way.
Bonus: From last year’s Eardrums Pop single, this is Skelecrats covering Serge Gainsbourg.

Earlier this year, A supergroup of Dublin-based Popical-related musicians calling themselves Skelocrats impressed many with their debut Whip Crack Away EP. Today, Land Lovers’ Padraig Cooney, Grand Pocket Orchestra’s Bronwyn Murphy-White and Paddy Hanna, Groom’s Michael Stevens are adding the Hot Yoga EP to their 2012 discography. The two EPs make up the physical release The Complete Skelocrats which is released today on Bandcamp.
The Hot Yoga EP clocks in at a sweaty steamy 20 minutes over 8 muscle-flexing songs of bright and bashful guitar-lead indie-rock music with harmonies aplenty and a multitude of voices providing them. As with the previous EP, the main vocal is handled by a different member which varies from the sweet (Bronwyn Murphy-White on ‘Insant Mummification’) to the spooky (Paddy Hanna on ‘Beat Your Buddies’).
You might have already seen Bobby Aherne’s music video for ‘Baby Reappraisal’ chronicling how the band got together today. That track is an immediate highlight but hroughout the EP, there’s a vim, a jauntiness, and a jangliness coloured with organ and fuzz pedals. This EP zips along.
The Popical Island universe is expanding once again. Actually, it’s kinda getting incestuous but in a good musical way. After bringing Dott on board for their debut release, the latest Popical group sees Land Lovers’ Padraig Cooney, Grand Pocket Orchestra’s Bronwyn Murphy-White and Paddy Hanna, Groom’s Michael Stevens combine as Skelecrats. Their free-to-download Whip Crack Away EP is not radically different from other bands on the label but it is equally as sweet with boy/girl harmonies, different singers taking the lead on songs and lo-fi production.
The songs were written by Padraig while recuperating from an operation earlier in the year. These two are my to standout tracks. Download the whole thing from Bandcamp or Soundcloud. Enjoy their “grotty pop” take on things:
Another EP will be released later in the year. The band make their live debut at Popicalia #14 this Saturday in Tavern On The Green alongside No Monster Club and So Cow.
