Listening post: The Maeve label pick some defining tracks

Avatar

Maeve is a record label with a global reach but with a thoroughly Irish background. The Berlin-based enterprise is the work of Mano Le Tough, Baikal and The Drifter who are touching down with the majority of the label’s hometown this Saturday for an all-day party in District 8 with RBMA.

The showcase will feature sets from each of the three, along with special guests John Talabot and New Jackson. As a preview and an overview of the label’s defining sound and taste, Mano Le Tough, Baikal and The Drifter (nice interview with him in XLR8R / he was on Beats in Space last night too) ,offered up some selections to represent the label’s output and sensibility.

The Drifter’s picks

Tahiti 80 – Darlin (John Talabot’s Oscuro Baile Remix)

John Talabot has produced so many great reworks and remixes over the years but this one has to be one of my favorites. Although this one went under the radar a little bit, it still works brilliantly on the dancefloor. He has being a good friend of ours for many years now and it’s an
absolute pleasure to have him come to Dublin and play a Maeve Party with us.

New Jackson – The Nightmail

What a debut! This is an amazing tune and one that all of us have played time and time again over the last few years. It’s always great to have a live element at our Maeve parties and New Jackson is certainly the most fitting for a return to Dublin. I’ll definitely have a smile on my face if he plays this in his live set this weekend.

Nathan Fake – You Are Here (Four Tet Remix)

I’ve always being a fan of Four Tet’s work, and like Talabot there is so many great remixes to choose from but this for me is one of his best.

Baikal’s picks

Matthew Dekay – Patience Please

Matthew Dekay produced a brilliant EP for the label last year and while the A side ‘Fangtango’ received a lot of praise and attention, it’s the B-side ‘Patience Please’ that does it for me. This is my favourite track of everything we have released thus far.

Motor – Man Made Machine (Radioslave Remix)

We are all massive fans of Radioslave at Maeve, all of us have being playing his records for years. This one is one of my favourites from him.

MOTOR feat. Martin L. Gore - Man Made Machine (Radio Slave Remix)

Simon Haydo – Step Inside

One of the most exiting new names of Techno if you ask me. Such an exciting signature sound and just plain nasty (in a good way).

Matthew Dekay – Fangtango

The other side to ‘Patience Please’, this record really put us on the map and is still a pleasure to play today. I remember first playing it in Panorama Bar and being like.. “wait a minute, we’ve got something here.”

Dj Koze – XTC

Dj Koze has been an ever present star in our universe, his current summer hit has lyrics that question the hedonism inherent in the music and its apparent contradictions. Deep, not just in terms of sound.

Adam Marshall – North at Night

A tune I keep coming back to me. Melancholic, epic, atmospheric magic.

The Maeve showcase happens at District 8 this Saturday. Win tickets in the gig guide.
