Chris Somers is one of the hardest-working and unfathomably busy individuals in Cork city today: having served time in a succession of guitar outfits, recent years have seen him expand his horizons into event curation with PLUGD Records, visual art, scoring for theatre and an increasingly busy sound-engineering schedule. New music was never going to… Read more »

Ships‘ album Precession is one of the finest records of the year song-wise along with the most sonically detailed. It’s been on constant play since it came out earlier in the year and Sorca McGrath and Simon Cullen’s gigs have been regular features since. For the Simon-featuring vocal cut ‘I Can Never’, the Dublin band… Read more »

Harry Bookless and Aaron Page’s Carriages project takes field recordings and weaves them into songs that sound organic, quaint and transformative at the same time. The Carriages project is the perfect start for independent promoter Homebeat’s new label arm as they are at the cross section of HB boss Emmet Condon’s musical interests and they… Read more »

One of the highlights from David Kitt’s recent New Jackson’s recent output is ‘Electric Blue’, his Bowie homage style track that came out on Fort Romeau’s label before his debut. At the recent Other Voices Berlin event, Kitt performed the song live for the cameras. Watch above. Watch Talos perform ‘In Time’ from Other Voices… Read more »

LCD Soundsystem might be putting out their first record since 2010 tomorrow with American Dream but that hasn’t stopped them sharing another track not on the tracklist for the new album. ‘pulse v.1’ is an instrumental 13 minute jam that must have come out of those sessions. The band’s three Dublin shows are sold out.

Here we go. Two of my favourite Irish acts combine on this remix of Ships‘ ‘None Of It Real’, the most recent version of which featured on the Nialler9 highly-recommended debut album Precession. Kildare duo Mix & Fairbanks have been knocking it out of the park of late on the remix front and last week… Read more »

Three great DJs doing a B2B set at Optimo’s 20 party as the grand finale for an all-day event that had a hefty lineup. This is my kind of set featuring LCD Soundsystem’s Lindstrom Tribulations mix, Moda’s ‘Retro & Grade’, Giorgio Moroder, Margarida and many more including that Optimo favourite – Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’. Dig… Read more »

Iglooghost is a young Irish-born UK-based producer Seamus Malliagh who can’t be more than  20 years old but who already has an EP on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. News has reached that his  heavy-beatdown atmospherics, dayglow rap beats and squiggly electronica will get a full-length release Neō Wax Bloom on the label on September 29th. After… Read more »

Peadar Kearney is the Kildare man behind the production moniker Phare and I’ve shared a number of his hypnotic dancefloor productions over the last year here including his recent 045 Recordings compilation track and his remix of Bantum. Bicep, Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson are gearing up to release their debut album on Ninja Tune next month. We’ve heard the excellent ‘Aura’ from the album and seen the tracklisting. ‘Glue’, the duo’s followup preview is a less dancefloor-focused but a shimmering slice of electronica. Bicep is out on September 1st. Bicep are at… Read more »

One of my favourite new artists of the last few years, Kelela has returned with new music. ‘LMK’, which stands for “Let me Know” restablishes Kelela’s clubby R&B sound as heard on Cut 4 Me mixtape and Hallucinogen EP. It’s taken from her album Take Me Apart out on October 6th on Warp Records. ‘Rewind’… Read more »

Monaghan three-piece Sun.Set.Ships are an electronic live band with pop sensibilities who will follow up their debut single and EP with ‘D_lay’, which is out on Friday. The band suggest the song has elements of the xx and The Police but I reckon the track is less tied to obvious influences – moving between Balaeric… Read more »

Last October, former Halfset members Stephen Shannon and Cillian McDonnell returned to music under the name Mount Alaska. The duo have a long-standing friendship (having met each other the week McDonnell moved to Dublin in 1994) and Mount Alaska allows the pair to indulge in a fully electronic recording process using analogue synths and equipment….
