Last October, former Halfset members Stephen Shannon and Cillian McDonnell returned to music under the name Mount Alaska. The duo have a long-standing friendship (having met each other the week McDonnell moved to Dublin in 1994) and Mount Alaska allows the pair to indulge in a fully electronic recording process using analogue synths and equipment…. I’ve covered Orange Tree’s first two releases here earlier this year but the success of the just-released third 12″ in the series from the Dublin label is worth noting because a) it’s currently top of the Juno chart in all genres and b) it has two grade A dancefloor bangers that people are really responding… Read more »

A new video for a highlight from David Kitt’s New Jackson album, which is one of my albums of 2017 so far. The video features 500 paintings by Galway artist Finbar 247 which were then animated by art art director Brett O’Mahony to match the track. Needless to say, it was a lengthy process.

1000 Beasts is a new project by Cian Sweeney, who is a freelance musician, pianist and producer who has recently worked with Jenny Greene & The RTE Concert Orchestra and Phil Coulter. 1000 Beasts is less a classical project and more of an intriguing electro-pop one with the idea being that each song in the… Read more »

The Dublin electro three-piece Sleep Thieves have been quiet the last while since 2014’s full-length You Want The Night but their pulsating synthesiser electronica is very much in tact with their returning track ‘Is This Ready?’. The song has the foreboding noir atmospherics of their established work with vocalist Sorcha Brennan at her most dramatic…. Read more »

Quinton Campbell is one of the more interesting and talented dancefloor producers to have emerged from the Dublin scene of late. For me, it began with ‘FM Patterns’, a nine-minute bleeping synth track that set him part from the pack and ended up on my Irish songs of the year list. A winner of 2016’s… Read more »

Ernest Greene’s Washed Out project began by taking samples of minor ’80s hits from VIP Connection, Change and Gary Low on his 2009 debut EP Life Of Leisure and making balmy synth-pop. It birthed the chillwave sound. It was also never matched. His music grew increasingly layered and less urgent. Today, Greene returned with his… Read more »
