Cork’s Stevie G and Ian Ring have released a couple of singles as AboveDat which move between R&B and electronic music. On their latest, they’ve turned their attention to British R&B singer Shaun Escoffery and his smooth soulful single ‘Ain’t No Time’. AboveDat add some dancefloor swing to the track as you can hear below:

2016’s best dudeAnderson .Paak continues his winning streak with more new music from his collaboration with Knxwledge as NxWorries. The album called Yes Lawd!, (a popular Paak phrase) is out in October on Stones Throw. ‘Lyk Dis’ is built on a warm beat production by Knzwledge (this is characteristically Stones Throw if you ask me), while Paak… Read more »

Hey, it looks like we’re finally going to get that Sampha debut album soon. ‘Blood On Me’ is a new track, co-produced with Rodaidh McDonald from Sampha’s forthcoming album Process to be released on Young Turks. The follow up to ‘Timmy’s Prayer’ is more upbeat than his usual style and lyrically, has a sense of… Read more »

Soulé is one of the artists who first came to my attention through playing Word Up Collective gigs. Now signed with new artist agency / production company Diffusion Labs, for her debut solo single, the UK-born Irish-based Soulé knocks it out of the park with ‘Love No More’. It’s a drum and bass-influenced dance song… Read more »

Thundercat has grown in stature recently, for his work with Kendrick Lamar and his own tunes like ‘Them Changes’. ‘Bus In These Streets’ is a song that sounds like a breezy 70s TV theme but is actually about technological dependence in the 21st century. It’s also a bit yacht-rock in tone. The song is a… Read more »

The second song from Banks’ forthcoming album The Altar (September 30th), ‘Gemini Feed’ is a cross between ’90s-era R&B (Brandy and Monica’s ‘The Boy Is Mine’ has the same marimba style) and the heady synth style that producer Sohn brings to the table. First single ‘Fuck With Myself’ was a little close to FKA Twigs… Read more »

Banks is back with a new album, the followup to the excellent Goddess on September 30th and ‘Fuck With Myself’ is our first taste, a a deeper, darker R&B style than we’re used to from her, imbued with convincing FKA Twigs-style atmosphere. Last year, Banks released ‘Better’ and featured on Chet Faker’s ‘1988’ remix. “This… Read more »

Stevie G & Young Wonder’s Ian Ring Abovedat project debuted a couple of months back with ‘Addicted’ featuring Christiana Underwood. After waiting so long for new music from The Avalanches, coming back with ‘Frankie Sinatra’ didn’t fill me with much hope. Lacking charm, nuance and substance, the hook-filled sample was enough to lock on to you while Doom and Danny Brown did a fine job with a novelty-sounding beat. In the Zane Lowe interview that… Read more »

Anyone interested in new music in Ireland will have been keeping an eye on Hare Squead. It was October 2014 at Hard Working Class Heroes when I first saw Tony Konstone, Jessy Rose and E-Knock play live and their R&B-swerved into electronic pop / rap style was something that has not really existed in Ireland… Read more »

After announcing their arrival with ‘Gentle Kind Of Lies’, an alternative R and B track, that self-described “agrosoul” tag is going to make much more sense after hearing BARQ’s ‘That Thing You Love’. BARQ say the track is an “a very aggressive song about meditation,” that has more prominent and eclectic jazz, rock and soul… Read more »

Last year, Future Islands rapped with Madlib on the stonking track ‘Trouble Knows Me’, while Canadian jazzy hip-hop instrumentalists BadBadNotGood did a band reinterpretation of ‘Seasons (Waiting On You’) and made an album with Ghostface Killah that was in my top 10 of 2015. That collaborative streak strikes here on ‘Time Moves Slow’, the first… Read more »

Sampha likes to take his time huh? In the five years he’s been making music in the public, first with SBTRKT and later on his own, there’s been a slow release of tunes. His last solo material was ‘Too Much’/’Happens’ in 2013 but in the meantime, he’s featured on songs from Kanye West, Drake and… Read more »
