Add The Bastard to that list. Leigh and Blake are members of Exxon Valdez who have released a free EP of brooding rap. It reminds me of Buck 65. Consider me super-impressed. The video was directed, filmed and edited by CFMeister.
I’m very impressed with this kid. London-born and raised in Ireland, Michael Stafford is a songwriter who has placed himself in the intersection between the world of urban pop, grime, hip-hop and dubstep. His soulful and reggae-tinged timbre is perfect for singing hooks as he demonstrates on Professor Green’s new single ‘Jungle’. Early Plan B comparisons are valid. Currently on tour with Chase & Status, he dropped a 10-track The Traveling Man mixtape on Bandcamp for free last week as a showcase of his talents backed by some dub-heavy and sweet acoustic guitar instrumentals.
Zuluboy was definitely one of the most interesting people we met on the Smirnoff Experience trip in Johannesburg. He has released three albums of conscious rap and as much as I hate that pigeonholing term, it fits Zuluboy perfectly. He’s also a popular soap actor in South Africa.
He is an inspiring human being who told us about his equally-inspirational workshops, how he fuses rap with African rhythms and is just generally awesome for the duration of our interview conducted alongside AU. Watch the video in which Black Dillinger appears with him:
