J. Cowhie, aka Goodtime John’s forthcoming album Good As Gold arrives on April 24th.
Written over four years between 2021 and 2025, the album follows on from his Bonnie “Prince” Billy collaboration, and features his friends and collaborators contributing.
Sadly, one of those pals is Glenn Keating, the Irish musician who passed away last month of cancer. Keating recorded some of this Good As Gold album at his studio in NCH, and plays bass on four tracks.
So, it’s very fitting then that the Delicious 9 video, edited by Eoghan Kidney, for the song ‘Chew Up The Love’, the third song from the record released to date – features analogue camcorder footage from a party the friends attended in 2001, with familiar faces from Ireland’s independent music scene – in a casual hang – indicative of the time, where the awareness of a camera present isn’t felt – just pals having a kickabout, dressing up, banging the piano and having a sing song, wearing masks and fake noses, big laughs and small moments shared. Some of it was shot for a a segment for a Delicious 9 sitcom that was never made of course, though the clip of John and Glenn singing the theme song is included.
The song’s blissful atmosphere, underscored by the video, is cut with a wistful feeling of nostalgia and the weight of everything. At these times, “it’s never too late to waste your time,” the song both acknowledging the hard times and the cosmic feelings between close pals.
The album is available to order via Bandcamp. Do listen to the other songs released also, they work wonders.
