Other Voices: Watch rapper Leo Miyagee chat to local Kerry folklorist about storytelling

Avatar

Other Voices has just finished airing their 22nd music TV series featuring performances live from Dingle, Cork and Cardigan.

While the team was in Dingle, they shot some nice artist and interview vignettes with Tiny Ark that explore the background and intention behind some of the artist who played both the church and the Music Trail.

Leo Miyagee is no stranger to Nialler9, and the Belfast rapper was one of the artists who engaged with the locals, as well as Limerick-born Dingle Peninsula-based historian and folklorist Billy Mag Fhloinn when the pair sat down in Leac a Ré Bookstore to talk about Irish storytelling and rap music.

The two artists discussed storytelling to make sense of the world, poetry, narratives and stage inspiration.

Other Voices next thing is Anam – Songs for Hearts & Minds will feature performances from Adrianne Lenker, Martin Hayes, Sarah Crean, Lemoncello, TraviS & Elzzz, Oisín Leech, Uly, EFÉ, Mohammad Syfkhan, Moncrieff and more performing in prestigious heritage sites across Ireland.

Billy Mag Fhloinn:

Billy Mag Fhloinn is a native of Limerick, Ireland. He holds a PhD in Irish Folklore, and a B.A. in archaeology, from University College Dublin. As well as lecturing and tutoring at university, he occasionally works in television and media, and makes and plays replicas of prehistoric musical instruments from Ireland.

Leo Miyagee:

Zimbabwean-born, Belfast-based hip-hop talent Leo Miyagee remains one of the most unique voices in the city’s ever-expanding music scene since he first emerged in 2018. After dropping a string of celebrated singles and EPs over the last number of years, the hotly tipped rapper’s career continues to build momentum with the release of his ‘Camus’ project in 2023.
