CMAT has released the video for the title track for her third album EURO-COUNTRY, out August 29th on AWAL Recordings.
All the big boys
All the Berties
All the envelopes, yeah they hurt me
I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me
Headlines had already been written about CMAT’s new song and it’s lyrical reference to the Celtic Tiger recession era when the country went from “we-all-parties” to a epidemic where men who suddenly lost money and capital started to kill themselves when austerity kicked in.
It’s a lyrical concern on the new song which kicks off with a verse in Irish, alongside a wider lament for how capitalism and changing economics affected Ireland and CMAT herself alongside the emigrant journey (“And now I feel just like Cú Chulainn, I feel like Kerry Katona”) and a video by Eilis Doherty that continues the gaudy Euroworld theme of singles so far a romp in the Omni shopping centre fountain in Santry.
“I have certain phrases that reverberate around my head over and over again – and EURO-COUNTRY was one of them. It’s the title of the album, and the name of the first song on the record. And it means three things to me: It’s the kind of country music I make; the fact that Ireland is a European country run by the euro; and that capitalism is one of the worst things to ever happen to us.”
CMAT today explains the concept around EURO-COUNTRY.
CMAT – Euroworld lyrics
Lyrics:
Cad is gá dom a dhéanamh mura bhfuil mé ag bualadh leat?
Tá ceann folamh agam, yah, agus pearsantacht nua
Eirím níos dofheicthe, is tú imithe, ó mo shaol
Níl aon rud fágtha sa scátháin
An mbeidh mé álainn mhaol?
Yah
I went away to come back
Like a prodigal christian
I lost a bit of weight, yeah, and gained it back when I missed him
I learned a lot from my being here
How I had to be on my own, yeah
And now I feel just like Cú Chulainn, I feel like Kerry Katona
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The mam and the dad)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The present is past)
Everything I thought that I could be
(He cut it in half)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(I do all he asks)
I never understood what this way of living could to do me
All the mooching ’round shops, and the lack of identity
So tryna be what he wasn’t born, all this pop star USA
I think we’re gonna die trying, I wish we weren’t this way
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The mam and the dad)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The present is past)
Everything I thought that I could be
(He cut it in half)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(I do all he asks)
All the big boys
All the Berties
All the envelopes, yeah they hurt me
I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me
And it was normal
Building houses
That stay empty even now, yeah
And no one says it out loud but I know it can be better if we hound it
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The mam and the dad)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(The present is past)
Everything I thought that I could be
(He cut it in half)
My EURO-EURO-EURO COUNTRY
(I do all he asks)
