Farewell to PLUGD/GULPD: 8 gigs & clubs to see in Cork this week

Mike McGrath-Bryan

So, it’s ‘goodbye for now’ this week for Plugd Records and Gulpd Cafe, with the shop and cafe staying open until Friday. Aside from the below gigs, the shop is having a clearance sale with 20% off vinyl and all CDs down to half-price. Get in and support them while you can.

Thank you to Jimmy Horgan, Albert Twomey and Chris Somers for providing a space that married eclecticism with accessibility, and placed the Cork music community at the heart of the city’s artistic firmament, as well as all of the promoters, curators, DJs and artists that made the place such a lifeline for Leeside tunes.

They’ve put music in the ears, hearts and minds of the people that are the building blocks of our city’s hive of mini-scenes and circles of friends, which is where culture belongs: not in the arbitrary and shifting definitions of a privileged few that leave spaces empty when so many in Cork are crying out for room to create.

TONIGHT – MONDAY JUNE 26TH:

Antakya Remains, Declan Synnott, Hames & more @ Gulpd (8pm, donations)
“It’s all pop from here on in”, says the marquee for this one. Or is it? More guests on the bill TBA.

TOMORROW NIGHT – TUESDAY JUNE 27TH:

Land Crabs @ Gulpd (8pm, €5)
The only band in Cork composed entirely from land-dwelling crustaceans. Support from the delightfully-monikered PCP.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 28TH:

Senior Infants @ Gulpd (8pm, €5)
Altered Hours beats-and-pieces side-project with a rare live incursion. Support from HEX.

THURSDAY JUNE 29TH:

The Altered Hours @ Gulpd (8pm, €6)
A final farewell to live activity for the Tobin Street cafe from the longtime custodians of Leeside psychedelia.

In the Attic @ The Friary (9pm, free)
If the Gulpd farewell is a bit much, the new music night at the Friary is the tonic: Gadget and the Cloud, Outsider Rapha and Little Grit performing upstairs in Cork’s biggest little bar.

SUNDAY JULY 2ND:

The Niall McCabe Band @ Connolly’s of Leap (8.30pm, €12)
“Transatlantic soul” outfit led by Mayo singer-songwriter brings a fusion of folk and soul under the hammers of Connolly’s.
