KiiKO is a new music project from Tokyo Dublin-based DJ Emmy Shigeta and her producer friend John McDowell ( of the cinematic modern classical production project As Many as Possible).
KiiKO’s debut song ‘July’ echoes the Japanese city, electronic and dream pop music that Emmy is known for, with a bright and melodic tune that recalls the likes of Lali Puna, Cornelius with drum and bass influences.
Strings on the track are by Naoise Dack of Glasshouse Ensemble.
July is released today July 7, 2025, in celebration of Japan’s Tanabata (Star Festival).
“In Japan, there’s a tradition called Tanabata, where on July 7 people make wishes to the night sky. It’s about hoping for the reunion of Orihime and Hikoboshi, who can only meet once a year. This song is about the nervousness of starting something new but still believing in yourself — and sending those feelings out to Tanabata.”
