MF DOOM and Madlib’s Madvillainy demos to be officially released
The rap album classic Madvillainy, from Madlib and MF DOOM is to get two new officially versions for its 20th anniversary.
The 2004 album, which we covered in detail on the Nialler9 Podcast, and a recent Listening Party, was leaked well ahead of the studio version and the demos of Madvillainy had been doing the rounds in the lead up to the actual release that year, arguably adding to the album’s hype..
The tracks contained early vocal cuts from DOOM, recorded and mixed in Los Angeles at Madlib’s Bomb Shelter studio. The leak spread quickly across the internet and into the desktop computers, mp3 libraries, and CD players of fans around the world.
Stones Throw will release, the Madvillainy Demos, on vinyl for the first time, along with the Madvillainy Audiophile Edition.
The demos were released on tape in 2008, as part of a Madvillain box set, then individually to mark the first Cassette Store Day in September 2013. The Madvillainy Demos vinyl is mastered by Dave Cooley – the original mastering engineer – and includes an insert with Eric Coleman’s contact sheets from the album cover shoot.
The Madvillainy Audiophile Edition is the album re-cut at 45rpm and pressed on 180g vinyl. Housed in a gatefold jacket with full album lyrics. Lacquer cut at Bernie Grundman. Manufactured at Optimal Media. Premium quality rice paper inner sleeves.
Pre-order on both today. Officially released November 29, 2024.
