New Albums

Say She She – Cut & Rewind

Say She She

The NYC trio Say She She take their name from Chic, and continue Rodgers and co. tradition of disco-funk and pop music, on this the third album from Priya Malik, Sabrina Mileo Cunningham and Nya Gazelle Brown.

Minnie Ripperton, Rotary Connection, Liquid Liquid, ESG, Lonnie Liston Smith and the Lijadu Sisters are references. It’s a tasteful, retro and pleasing release despite the press release referencing contemporary punk peers.

They play Dublin on November 23rd at The Academy.

Kettama – Archangel

The London-based G-Town DJ and producer Evan Campbell’s debut album on Steel City Dance Discs.

Archangel is an album that’s a decade in the making from the Galway artist – a 15-track project blending hard-house, trance-inflected euphoria, hip-hop sample-based vibes.

Guests turns come from scenesetters Interplanetary Criminal, Fred again.., Clouds, Prospa, DJ HEARTSTRING, Shady Nasty, SØLV and seantommy.

Singles ‘Air Maxes’ with Fred again.. and Shady Nasty, ‘Yosemite’ with Interplanetary Criminal, and ‘If U Want My Heart’ with DJ Heartstring and KLP were previously released.

Alex Gough – Painful

The London-based Waterford artist Alex Gough used to make Anderson .Paak-style jazzy hip-hop R&B with himself behind the kit. Recent years have seen the artist move away from that direct style, in favour of more nebulous songcraft, with alt R&B artists Mk.Gee, Dijon and the hip-hop electronics of Vegyn mentioned as references.

Painful is Gough’s rebirth with the album’s experimental sonics underscoring the record’s contrast to what has gone before with the artist’s playful FX and mood-based approach to the tracks as an multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer.

Taylor Swift – The Life of a Showgirl

The twelfth album from the pop megastar, written by Taylor Swift, Max Martin and Shellback, produced by Max Martin, Shellback and Taylor Swift, and features Sabrina Carpenter, a return to a more pop sonic space after albums made with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner.

Early gossip says the song ‘Actually Romantic’ is a Charli XCX diss track. An 89-minute “film event” called Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl is also showing in cinemas this weekend.

Houseplants – Live At Beekeeper’s

Daithí and Paul Noonan’s two Houseplants albums are at their best in the live arena, bringing Noonan’s gift for bon-mots to a full-bodied band-assisted dance party.

Today they release a full live album, recorded at Daithí’s artist retreat, The Beekeeper’s in the Burren in Clare, which clocks in at 114 minutes.

Houseplants upcoming shows this December are – Cyprus Avenue Cork (11th December), Róisín Dubh Galway (12th December) and Dolan’s Warehouse Limerick (13th December) – in addition to previously announced shows at the Button Factory on October 17th & 18th.

Leon Vynehall – In Daytona Yellow

Much less house and dancefloor focused than previous releases, the third album from British artist Leon Vynehall, on his own label Ooze INC is inspired by contemporary and 80s avant-pop and is more exploratory electronic songcraft cut from nocturnal R&B and pop.

The album’s visual and conceptual identity took shape after Vynehall visited Minamidera by the renowned American “master of light” artist James Turrell in Naoshima, Japan. The exhibition—a meditation on perception—profoundly influenced the way Vynehall approached the album’s sonic world. “The artwork hasn’t changed, you have,” a guide tells visitors at the conclusion of the piece. This sentiment is deeply embedded in In Daytona Yellow.

In bringing his vision to life, Vynehall assembled a collective of like-minded artists: vocalists TYSON, POiSON ANNA, Beau Nox, Kenzie TTH, Jeshi, and Birmingham band Chartreuse, alongside multi-instrumentalist Harvey Dweller and string arranger Amy Langley, as well as long time collaborator artist Eric Timothy Carlson, and photographer Amandsa Elise K. Together, they create a richly textured, emotionally charged landscape.

Kelly Moran – Don’t Trust Mirrors

Warp Records-releasing pianist and composer’s new album was inspired by a period of extensive touring playing her sets in early evenings and dancing to techno after til late.

It means Don’t Trust Mirrors is a more rhythmic followup to her 2018 Warp Records debut Ultraviolet. Bibio features on the title track.

Laura Elizabeth Hughes – Knots & Echoes

Irish singer-songwriter releases a debut album of piano balladry, alt-folk pop, and reflective melodic vocals, and occasionally spoken word.

The album was produced by long-time collaborator Cian Sweeney (As If I Always Knew / 1000 Beasts).
