Sweet sweet Trinidad
Last month, there was activity on The Avalanches myspace page that suggested that the near-nine year wait for a follow-up to Since I Left You was at an end. While the message “putting the finishing touches on album 2 !!!!!!!!!” was promising, I’m not holding my breath. Instead, I delved into the archive and found this 20 minute mix from Robbie Chater and Dexta Fabay of the band from a 2001 BBC Radio One broadcast from Ibiza.
Taking in some probably rare and definitely unique Carribbean rhythms including a celebratory cricket song with the line “England must understand / We are the champions“, two calypso songs from Van Dyke Parks (I was unaware of this album), the ill-fated The Jackson Sisters, Bob Dylan, The Avalanches, Beach Boys, CSNY and obviously, as many songs as The Avalanches can skillfully fit into 20 minutes. And, it’s all laden with the crackle of warm vinyl. If their long-awaited second album is anywhere as good as this, it will be worth the wait.
