The iconic venue and former cinema The Savoy in Cork is reopening next month.

Cork promoters The Good Room are taking the keys of the space which has been closed since 2016.

The Good Room were behind the Kino, It Takes A Village Festival and have continued putting on gigs at Live at St. Luke’s, Cork Opera House and Cork Podcast Festival amongst others in recent years. They will reopen the venue with the blessing of owners Clarendon Properties on Valentine’s Weekend.

The venue features a capacity of 600 across two rooms, the main room and an upstairs lounge.

The Good Room are Joe Kelly, Ed O’Leary and Caoilian Sherlock.

In a Good Room post on Insta, the promoters said:

We’ve been holding onto this one for a while, and we’re super excited to finally share:

We are reopening Savoy!

This building means a lot to Cork.

From its early days as a cinema, to live music and late nights that became part of the city’s collective memory. The Savoy has always been a place where people came together around music and culture. We’re incredibly excited to be a part of bringing it back into use again.

The main venue has been carefully updated as a dedicated live performance space, with a newly installed, high-spec sound system.

The space is designed to handle everything from intimate folk shows to dedicated club nights and all things imaginable in between.

Alongside this, the building now includes a second, smaller venue called The Lounge, located upstairs. The Lounge will host smaller gigs, club nights and special events, giving the venue a lot of flexibility.

The venue’s new public entrance is on Drawbridge Street, just off Patrick Street, behind Dunnes Stores.

Savoy will be a live music venue and cultural space. It will be regular bar closing hours rather than running as a late night club. However we will still be booking some of the best DJs in the country and from abroad to fill the iconic dancefloor.

We’re opening the doors on Saturday 14 February with a proper opening party.

Live music and DJs across two floors featuring
BoolaBoom Zurito, The Leon Stax Equation plus DJ’s Stevie G, Angi and Danilo

Tickets on sale Monday 26th January from eventbrite.ie.

The Savoy opened in 1932 as a cinema until the 70s when it became a live music venue with the likes of Rory Gallagher, Taste, Bee Gees, Rolling Stones, Run DMC and more playing in the early years until it became an arcade, then a venue and night club into the turn of the millennium until it closed in 2016.

In the latter years (2000 – 2016) the live acts the Savoy hosted included, Jape, Mastadon, Wu-Tang Clan, 2ManyDjs, Morrissey, Primal Scream, Biffy Clyro, Super Furry Animals, Lisa Hannigan, MGMT, Wolf Alice, Paul Van Dyk, The Smiths, Shane McGowan, JJ72, The Thrills, BellX1 and more, with club nights hosting Duke Dumont, Route 94, Ejeca, Green Velvet and Kerri Chandler.
