The now Donegal-based musician has a new album You & i are Earth, out January 24th 2025 via City Slang.
You & i are Earth was produced by John ‘Spud’ Murphy (Lankum), and is partly, “a love letter to a man and to Ireland.”
The album’s first single is ‘Agnes’, which like the artist, has an Irish connection with Anna Mieke featuring, who is one a few Irish musicians featured on the record including Kate Ellis and Caimin Gilmore from Crash Ensemble, Cormac MacDiarmada from Lankum.
“This song is inspired by Irish folklore, therapy practice, and a tweet. In therapy we had been meditating and visualizing, a practice that is in turns frightening and deeply comforting. Concurrently, I was reading about Selkies and Faeries, and it was when I read this tweet that I felt the folklore melding with my own personal therapeutic experiences. That moment of potential relief followed by a deep terror, and the act of turning your clothes inside out to release your entrapment from the ‘stray sod’.
Anna Mieke plays/sings the voice of the titular character, “an embodiment of the fascination and fear, the joy and the reverence” Savage felt in these lessons. “I struggled to think of people who could be Agnes’s voice, and suddenly I realised Anna Mieke was perfect, I adore her music, and her vocals/lyrics are in turns delicate and ethereal, powerful and a little uncanny. I am so grateful to her for taking on this wild song and making Agnes come to life.”
You & i are Earth is the third album from Anna B Savage, folllowing A Common Turn and in|FLUX.
The Irish connection began when Savage studied a poetry Masters in Manchester, where both her teachers were Irish and she adored the work of Seamus Heaney.
Savage then did a Masters in Music in Dublin, and was learning about sean-nós singing, Cartoon Saloon, and Irish mythology, before moving to Donegal in-between touring with The Staves and St Vincent, soundtrack work with the Alex Lawther-directed short film “Rhoda” and Mike Lindsay’s collaborative Supershapes album a track called ‘Table’ was previously featured.
The Irish influence is further evident in the new album’s titles ‘Donegal’ and ‘ Mo Cheol Thú ‘.
“One of the things that I was reading while I was making this record was Manchán Magan’s book 32 words for Field, and the idea that language can have an explicit connection to the land. When I am in Ireland, that sense of grounding is vast but also intimate, and sometimes it’s a bit magical and sometimes a bit scary.”
The album artwork was taken in Co.Sligo too.
