For fans of MIA…Santogold
Standing beside her in the photo is Santogold, a Brooklyn based artist who draws from the same genres as Ms Maya Arulpragasam. Her music is a diverse mix of grime, hip-hop, ragga, dancehall and electro, hence the comparisons. Her myspace also says basement rock and Bananarama-soundclash which I like the sound of. She has toured with MIA, was on that filthy Lindsay Lohan song and has had Disco D, Switch, Sinden, Freq Nasty, Diplo, Radioclit, Naeem Juwan of Spank Rock amongst others produce her tracks.
So for those who need a break from Kala goodness, check these songs out. First up, is “Creator”, a grimey, wobbling track that Lady Sovereign might have been comfortable with but with a much better delivery and a catchy chorus. “Shove it” is a summery reggae joint featuring Naeem of Spank Rock with the refrain of “We’re think you’re a joke / Shove your hope where it don’t shine ” while “You’ll find a way (Switch and Sinden remix)” is a great bass, blip and squelch number. Sounds like she has a promising future ahead. Watch out for the Santogold album dropping soon.
