Sound of South Africa: JR – Show Dem (Make The Circle Bigger)
This tune has been massive in South Africa for the last few months apparently. The “make the circle bigger” refrain has made it a sort of a novelty dance record. It’s still a million times better than the fucking ‘Cha Cha Slide’. For a pop record, it’s a pretty leftfield dance production to European ears on par with the more underground dance stuff happening around the world.
Anyway, we went much much deeper underground on our trip to Johannesburg, South Africa in the last seven days – I’ll be sharing my experiences of the music there all this week from Kwaito (South African hip-hop) to African rock fusion to the little known Shangaan electro scene where I had one of the most unique experiences of my life.
