Lee Fields and the Expressions
Time to talk soul once again. Summer soul. How could anyone not love this? Lee Fields is described as a “pure, gut-bucket soul singer”. Having released limited 7″s and one album in the ’70s, the New York production team Truth & Soul decided to do some Al Green/Questlove shit and get him to record a brand new album of nostalgia-tinged modern soul ballads. The result is superb – you can hear a man who maybe hasn’t belted it out quite as hard in quite a long time.
The press release for My World also notes the cross-generation/genre twist going on here – “hip hop-reared record collectors come full circle to produce an album of beautiful soul music with one of the progenitors who made it all possible.” Nice. This is beautiful stuff.
