M(h)aol sing about gendering the drum kit on ‘Snare’
The Irish intersectional feminist band M(h)aol release a new son and announce a tiny Dublin show.
M(h)aol, the band based between Dublin, Belfast and London are now a trio – Constance Keane (She/Her), Jamie Hyland (She/Her), and Sean Nolan (He/Him) – after bassist Zoe Greenway left recently to focus on film work and singer Róisín Nic Ghearailt left the group, citing the difficult lifestyle of a touring musician with a chronic condition.
‘Snare’ is the band’s second single since the release of their debut album Attachment Styles, and its reissue on Merge, after ‘Pursuit’.
“‘Snare’ is about countless conversations I’ve had since my first drum lesson on my ninth birthday about how bizarre it is that I play that instrument, or how I should be doing it differently,” recalls lead vocalist and drummer Constance Keane.
“The idea of society gendering an inanimate object like a drum kit, when it’s something that brings me so much joy and release, has always frustrated me hugely, and I thought it was time to sing about it.”
The band are playing a small show in Dublin at Anseo on November 29th. Tickets and more dates below.
