On Repeat: tUnE-yArDs, No Monster Club, Shugo Tokumaru, Nicki Minaj & Chris Brown
A regular roundup of five tunes or records that are getting the repeat treatment.
1. tUnE-yArDs – ‘Bizzness’
Merrill Garbus’ returns with new album w h o k i l l which unlike previous album Bird-Brains was recorded in a proper studio. ‘Bizzness’ is a radio rip from Zane Lowe’s show but the Afro-folk-influenced song is too awesome to ignore. Check out an interesting interview with her from The Tofu Hut. Update: now an official stream.

2. No Monster Club – ‘The Last Bottle In The World’
The standout track from No Monster Club’s most recent EP Young Guts Champion released on Aussie label Masses / Masses. Listen and buy it on Bandcamp. More tunes on Soundcloud.

3. Shugo Tokumaru – ‘Tracking Elevator’
Shugo Tokumaru’s latest album was the first of his releases to break into the Top 40 in Japan. He’s highly underrated internationally but is one of my favourite voices of ALL-TIME. Port Entropy was released on Polyvinyl Records and excitingly, he plays at SXSW this year. One of the other songs from the album was featured in last week’s podcast and there are more tunes on Youtube. Update: Spinner have an album stream.
4. Nicki Minaj – ‘Did It On ‘Em’
Having finally come to terms that her U.S. chart-topping album Pink Friday wasn’t going to parallel her guest rap verses in ferocity, I’ve been enjoyed her album for what it is, a no-nonsense collection of high-quality rap-pop. Plus, she’s totally bonkers.
5. Chris Brown – ‘Look At Me Now (feat. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes)’
Yes, THAT Chris Brown. Produced by Diplo. Haidoo also pointed me to a “Brownless-version” of the tune by Prince Klassen if you really can’t forgive him for the Rihanna thing.
