The Tokyo-born, New York-based multi-instrumentalist brings his hybrid live show to Dublun.
Takuya Nakamura returns to Dublin this autumn for a headline show at Opium on Thursday October 29th.
It has been a busy year in Ireland for the trumpeter, keyboardist, producer and DJ. He played a late one at Fidelity Studio over the June bank holiday weekend, and turned up on Red Bull’s Dance Forever stage at All Together Now earlier this month, following an appearance at a Forbidden Fruit afterparty at Yamamori Tengu.
Nakamura’s journey to his current status is a long one. He left Tokyo for the United States in 1990 to study under the jazz theorist and composer George Russell at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, building the grounding in theory and composition that still shapes how he writes.
He moved to New York City in 1994 and became a fixture in the city’s jazz and experimental scenes, playing keys and electric trumpet with cult acts including Jojo Mayer’s Nerve and CocoRosie. Along the way he has recorded and performed with Quincy Jones, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, GZA, Laurie Anderson and the Sun Ra Arkestra.

These days he folds those jazz roots into electronic production, and the live set moves between piano, trumpet, turntables and hardware, pulling in soul, house, jungle and techno as it goes.
He plays Limelight 2 in Belfast the following night, Friday October 30th, presented by SHINE with support from Crilli Dnb.
Tickets for Opium go on sale on Friday August 21st at 10am via Ticketmaster. A presale runs from Thursday August 20th at 10am, and you can sign up for access here.
