1.

Horsegirl

Rock City

Phonetics On and On, the second album from New York-based college-going Chicago trio Horsegirl is a fine collection of janky indie pop music released on Matador Records., and produced by Cate Le Bon.

It’s the kind of album that has drawn comparisons to the Velvet Underground, The Strokes, The Feelies, and Pavement and The Guardian have called it “a minimalist indiepop masterpiece.”

While I wouldn’t go that far this early on, it’s certainly one of the nicest discoveries in a line of indie rock records I’ve heard in a while, since Manning Fireworks?

Horsegirl play The Workman’s Club in Dublin on June 24th.

2.

Factory Floor

Between You

Yeow. The return of Factory Floor, the UK band who last released an album in 2016 is a big cause of celebration as Gabe Gurnsey and Nik Colk Void don their punk industrial dance hats once more.

‘Between You’ is the band’ first release since 2018, released on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound, and is a return to the duo’s robust hypnotic visceral electronic sound.

3.

bdrmm

Lake Disappointment

Hull band bdrmm have an album out later this month called Microtonic (February 28th) on on Mogwai’s Rock Action label.

‘Lake Disappointment’ is the third preview from the record, in which a drum and bass rhythm meets pulsating synthesizers for a dark-gilded track that sounds like industrial rockers Health in tone, if a tad lighter.

It’s all part of bdrmm’s increased reliance of electronic sounds in their newest work

4.

Soda Blonde

People Pleaser

Is it really SO bad being a people pleaser Soda Blonde ask?

Well, probably when it comes to love, as this Valentine’s Day release from the Dubliners posits.

“’People Pleaser’” is an anthem for people who love too easily, lose themselves too often, and mistake validation for love. It’s about the cycle of seeking connection at any cost— even when it hurts,” says songwriter Faye O’Rourke.

Soda Blonde are finally going to SXSW this year after last year’s protestations bout sponsorship and they have a big year of gigs announced.
