1.

Soda Blonde

The Queen Of Mercy

Following from recent tracks ‘People Pleaser’, ‘Bully’, ‘The Saddest Thing’, the Dublin band Soda Blonde had released another Fleetwood Mac-esque alternative pop banger, along with a great video by the band’s own Adam O’Regan.

“I’m what you’d call one of the worst wives ever,” is a great line in another great song from the Soda Blonders.

Maria Somerville

Stonefly

The Galway singer-songwriter and morning NTS Radio host Maria Somerville is set to release a second album entitled Luster, on 4AD on April 25th.

We’ve heard ‘Projections’ and ‘Garden’ and this week ‘Stonefly’ continues the shoegaze haze dreampop vibe.

The album features contributions from J. Colleran, Brendan Jenkinson , Diego Herrera (aka Suzanne Kraft), Lankum’s Ian Lynch, Margie Jean Lewis, Henry Earnest and Finn Carraher McDonald (aka Nashpaints) Roisin Berkley and Olan Monk.

Irish gigs:

15 April – Coughlans, Cork
16 April – Dolans, Limerick
17 April – Black Box, Belfast
18 April – Button Factory, Dublin

3.

Officer John

Stay

Speaking of shoegaze, there’s definitely some of that guitar vibe from that realm from the new release coming on Wah Wah Wino. ‘Stay’ also has a baggy ’90s thing going on.

Officer John is the project of Amsterdam-based Niall Rogers, and there’s a 12″ coming later in the year with a Morgan Buckley remix. Live band shows are planned.

4.

The Guilteens

Further Down The Channel

The Guilteens are a new psych rock band from Cork on their second single, the spindly rock’n’roll ooze of ‘Further Down The Channel’ is a winner.

The single was recorded with Christian Best (Mick Flannery, Susan O’ Neill), mixed by John Spud Murphy (Lankum, ROIS) and mastered by Jamie Hyland (Mhaol, Gilla Band)

5.

Gilbert

Equilibrium

The Dublin ambient and contemporary piano composer John Carew sent over his new album Sown, and I was particularly taken by this kaleidoscopic bubbly instrumental.

The album is on streaming in full.

6.

Ispíní na hÉireann

Mo Shéamuisin

The Sausages Of Ireland are gearing up to release a new album called Poxtail Soup and to play their biggest Dublin show yet.

Their version of traditional song ‘An Bhfaca Tú Mo Shéamuisin’ is an expansive take from the band with Doireann Ní Ghlacáin joining the band on vocals and fiddle for a mystic Celtic stomp.
