Still Going’s ‘Spaghetti’s Circus’ has an magic chugging quality to it, and it’s back on vinyl for the first time since 2009.
Still Going are Eric Duncan and Olivier Spencer and the story goes that the New York pair placed the A-side ‘Spaghetti Circus’ into the hands of DFA and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy when he was DJing one night and he lashed it on there and then.
Spaghetti Circus’ draws on the classic sounds of propulsive disco via its looping loping bassline that sounds like it was designed to interrupt a conversation (like Harry Thumann’s classic ‘Underwater’ it must be said), matched in its cosmic spinning intensity by Reggie Watts’ wig-out vocals (as he did on Shit Robot’s ‘Where It’s At’), big galloping 4/4 beats and grounding piano notes that feel like the only thing keeping this track tethered before it ascends into a higher atmosphere where the guitar solo lives.
I first heard this tune, as I have with many keepers, when Gavin Elsted played it at a Lumo Club party, and it’s finally now on repress from the label for the first time and out on August 14th.
DFA Irish fans take note – avoid the customs fees and get it locally in Spindizzy.
