Unreleased: Dabrye – Game Over (Flying Lotus remix)
You may have heard that Flying Lotus is the latest addition to the Warp family. You may have heard his track “1983” used in the recent Modeselektor Boogy Bytes mix. You may also be aware that his great-aunt is the late truly great Alice Contrane, wife of John Coltrane and an equally seminal jazz musician in her own right. Or that Lotus (real name Steven Ellison) makes the music for the segues on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
The guy is not ridin’ on anyone’s coat-tails however as his album 1983 proved he is adept at engaging funky instrumental electro hip hop jams. So it’s fitting then that he should remix a peer of his – Dabrye. This is a remix of my favourite track from Dabrye’s Two/Three album featuring J Dilla and Phat Kat. Lotus drops a ominous chant snippet over a bass-heavy beat with nice electronic flourishes.
