This week was the first of 2015 which a tidal wave of new music washed over me in a big surge. With SXSW out of the way, many artists began to set out their stall for the coming year who hadn’t already.

So we had two great new tracks from Jamie xx, a near-11 minute triptych song from Belfast’s Girls Names inspired by the Group Zero art movement, an impressive track from Matador’s new signing Haelos, new Irish music from Fight Like Apes, Little xs for eyes, Lakker, Roisin Murphy, Spies and Rusangano Family.

SXSW was buzzing for Shamir who dropped his fun track ‘Call it Off’ and Tei Shi capitalised on her appearances there with ‘Go Slow’.

There’s also brand new Hudson Mohawke, Teleman and Florence + The Machine. It was at times, an overwhelming music week. Here’s my way of digesting the best of it – a playlist. That’s not all of it nor does it include albums.

Last year, you all helped me out with creating a modern Irish playlist for St. Patrick’s Day.

Like, our Paddy’s Day Unlocked event tomorrow in Meeting House Square, the playlist represents the truly current, the young musicians, the modern Irish musicians who are changing the perceptions of our country’s music at home and abroad.

Whether it’s Hozier, All Tvvins, James Vincent McMorrow, Lakker, Girl Band, SOAK or New Jackson, Irish music is about more than the diddly eye and Bono headlines exported around the world.

So, stick this playlist on, press shuffle and let it play. There’s over 100 songs and 7 hours of music here:

    Spotify playlist

    686a5b1a56c66d1ed11d63db030045b4

Everyone seems impressed by the new Tame Impala song this week, and why not? It was described as “Daft Punk and Metronomy having sex on a Mustang backseat,” so if that doesn’t convince you to listen, then I can’t help you.

Sticking with the psych-rock buzz, the Thee Oh Sees are back. Speaking of band comparisons, LCD Soundsystem fronted by Bono?.

Young Wonder knocked it out of the park with ‘Enchanted’, This Greedy Pig got on the label ladder with a new Hystereo release, SignA brought Italy and Ireland closer together, Young Fathers gave us their most TVOTR-sounding track yet, Girlpool conjured up ’90s alt-rock brassness and Tandem Felix delved into indie country.

Grimes also dropped a video-only once-off track for Asian fans called ‘Realiti’ that’s pretty great.

We had new music from Villagers, Active Child, Planet Parade and Sufjan. The playlist below is rounded out by some new jams I didn’t get chance to write about from House Of Wolves, Jay Electronica, Mt. Wolf, October Glow, Halos and Joywave.

This week, songs that impressed came from Cork’s The Hard Ground, LA R&B singer Kelela in stark mode on ‘A Message’, Toro Y Moi doing what he does best, Chris Clark giving us a pummeling with ‘Silver Sun’ from his new Flame Rave EP and there was “psych afro-rock at 138 BPM” from Melbourne’s Broadway Sounds.

SertOne teamed up with another Aussie Maribelle on ‘Lost & Found’, the Chromatics gave us another free download single called I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around from their new album Dear Tommy. From the North of Ireland, Ciaran Lavery & Ryan Vail teamed up for ‘The Colour Blue’, the first track from a mini-album.

Loud Mouth Collective gave us a song from Volume 7 of their series, Kool Thing returned with a new sound and name – Evvol. Mullingar indie-pop band The Academic released their first track in a while called ‘Different’. The brilliant Oh Wonder came back with their seventh track ‘Technicolour Beat’ and news of their first live show in London and Action Bronson’s collab with Chance The Rapper showed us that his major label debut Mr Wonderful could be just that.

Finally, there’s room for a reissue from a release that kicked off the Awesome Tapes From Africa blog. A bonkers global dance album from Ghanaian singer/producer Ata Kak discovered on cassette gets a release on vinyl, CD, tape and digitally.
