After last week’s Grimes re-edit, Four Tet suddenly dropped a collection of unreleased material from 1997 to 2001 on Soundcloud today called 0181, promising a vinyl release soon and all. For now though, it’s a free download. Result! Cheers Mr. Hebden.
If FaltyDL’s soulful jazz garage cut ‘Straight & Arrow’ wasn’t impressive enough, Four Tet bends it into new shapes with a typically evocative percussive remix that unravels into a bleepy tech-house workout. Both tunes are high quality. It’s released on 12″ through Ninja Tune, 7″ with a Gold Panda remix or featuring on FaltyDL’s 2013 album Hardcourage.
If the deeper house of Four Tet’s recent compiled album Pink doesn’t do it for you (this RA review sums up some of my feelings on the release), this remix of Nigel Godrich’s new band Ultraísta is a reminder of Hebden’s remix skills. Exquisite percussive touches and some surprising use of chopped and screwed vocals help make this a winner.
You can get a download of this track on the iTunes version of the album in the US but it’s not available here yet. Hear the original below.
Four Tet dropped a hip-hop-heavy mix for Diplo’s BBC Radio 1Xtra radio show featuring Clipse, Actress, Jai Paul, Kirko Bangz, Giggs, D’Angelo, Dilla, Pharrell, Masta Killa and Clams Casino. He’s also posted it for download and all.
There was also a TNGHT mix broadcast on the same show which you an listen to standalone on BBC.
While you were enjoying your weekend (like me at Camden Crawl Dublin), you may have missed a couple of Four Tet related things. Firstly, a new 12″ single will be released on Kieran Hebden’s own TEXT label with the exploratory twinkle of A-side ‘Jupiters’ leading the way before B-side ‘Ocoras’ goes for a more hypnotic dancefloor rapture. My personal favourite of the two.
Another gorgeous new tune from Kieran Hebden. It will be released on the We Are The Works In Progess double vinyl compilation out on the 10th January which is a Japan benefit compilation compiled by Blonde Redhead. It also features tracks from Karin Dreijer Andersson, Nosaj Thing, Pantha Du Prince, Deerhunter, Interpol and more. Pre-order.
Part three of the Radiohead 12″ remixes series sees Four Tet stretch ‘Seperator’ into warmer shapes , Lone go ‘Feral’ and Pearson Sound go funky on ‘Morning Mr. Magpie’. This is out now in Ireland (if there are any copies at all) and elsewhere next week.
