9 new Irish songs you should hear this week
A lot of Irish music comes Nialler9’s way and there’s little time to feature everything we think is worthy of a thumbs up or more ears. Every week, we collate the songs that pass our writers that deserve to be heard by you. For more extensive Irish coverage, follow our Spotify playlist or hit up the Irish section.
1.
Marcus
Obey
The debut single from Dublin singer-songwriter Marcus was an absolute pleasure to stumble across. ‘Obey’ is a tender ode, an idiosyncratic love song penned with an endearingly introverted sort of sweetness.
Carried on a simple, compelling guitar chord progression, Marcus’ vocal delivery sticks out for its nasal, heavily accented timbre. It’s bloody great.
2.
Cbakl
Rent Due
I think that it’s more than fair to say that Cbakl is one of, if not the best, hip-hop producers in the nation. ‘Rent Due’ is another, soulful, melodic cut from an artist who excels at giving old school sounds a contemporary sheen.
3.
Kyoto Love Hotel
I Float
Cinematic electronic duo Kyoto Love Hotel has returned with new single ‘I Float’. I really like the contrast between the airy vocals and accompanying synths during the verses and the fuller, four to floor arrangement used throughout the choruses. Those dynamic swells give the entire tune a sense of narrative and progression.
4.
New Pagans
Admire
Belfast five-piece New Pagans‘ latest single ‘Admire’ features some really great guitar work, both in performance and production. The rhythm guitar catches the metering of the lyrics superbly. It’s a nice rock track that recalls elements of both shoegaze and more alternative sounds.
5.
Arvo Party
Melodie
Belfast producer Arvo Party is going to be releasing his third album Love Above All tomorrow. ‘Melodie’ is the final single to be released before the full project is out.
‘Melodie’ feels and sounds like a progressive, narrative-driven track. One that takes a simple idea and builds, adding layers and dynamic swells to a core vibe. The production is very clean, with the track offering a rich stereo image throughout.
6.
Brigid Mae Power
On A City Night
Folk artist Brigid Mae Power has announced her third album, Head Above The Water, which will hear the release in the coming months. ‘On A City Night’ is lifted from that project, a country-inspired track complete with some gorgeous lap steel guitars.
7.
Bon Voyage
High Power (Ashley Beedle, Darren Morris North Street’ Rave Dub)
Hip-house duo Bon Voyage released new belter ‘High Power’ recently. We think we prefer this dub version a pinch more than the original. Get this into you while searching for some much-needed motivation.
8.
Thumper
Ad Nauseum
Thumper‘s ‘Ad Nauseam’ isn’t’ the finest material we’ve ever heard from the sextet. The track feels a little straighter, by the book, then some of their previous material.
While it doesn’t quite land the same punch as ‘Down’ or ‘Afl’, ‘Ad Nauseam’ proves that the group can still produce compelling rock music even when not at their very best.
9.
Robert John Ardiff
Evie
Robert John Ardiff’s latest single is some straight-up wholesome rock & roll. Grainy, low end heavy and boasting some witty one-liners throughout. Get it into ya.
