If you’ve been paying attention to Dublin’s gigging calendar, you may have caught these guys live in recent months. Alarmist are an instrumental band who rather than focus on ambience, slow-build and all those post-rock histrionics, instead are closer to the thrill of Battles or Tortoise (for reference) in their quest for fast-paced twisting and turning melody passages. The instruments pursue each other through a maze of notes and it’s quite a thrilling sound.
Neil Crowley, Elis Czerniak, Osgar Dukes and Barry O’Halpin make up the band and their debut five-track EP is released next week on the Eleven Eleven label on August 18th 2011. Listen to the EP below and grab a download of ‘Giraffe Centre.’
Alarmist live dates:
Thursday August 18th – 5pm Tower Records 18th Birthday Celebrations and EP launch instore.
Friday August 19th – Block T – Alarmist EP launch with support from The Dying Seconds (€8, BYOB, € for an EP on the night. )

I would love it more if there was no redneck manifesto guitar twiddles. As tracks they are really well structured but some of those guitar bits are just stupid.
Just because a band play instrumental rock it doesn’t mean they should be compared to the Redneck Manifesto as they themselves have taken influence elsewhere. There are a lot more bands in Ireland that are closer in sound to them than Alarmist! Yes the tracks are well structured but how are “some of those guitar bits stupid”?
It’s not the Westmoreland st Londis deli pick ‘n’ mix, I’ll have mine with no guitar twiddles please. You like it or you don’t. I like it. Nice feature
I think the “stupid” guitar parts add to the whole experience, they are unique and always seem to catch my attention. But god forbid a band would try and do something a little different for once….
I reckon it’s actually cooler than the rednex stuff. So there.
Yeah, I enjoyed that! Math influenced rock is a very popular genre in Ireland it seems.
