I love reading those pieces in magazines where artists are asked what’s on their stereo / iPod etc. I remember Buck 65 recommending John Fahey for example. So with that in mind, here’s a list of recommendations from artists I’ve interviewed lately. Hope you find something of interest. I’m digging Holy Fuck-recommended The Oscillations.
Cadence Weapon
Clipse/ Re-Up Gang – We Got It For Cheap Mixtape Vol. 3
Trim – Soul Food Vol. 2– (Grime rapper from London)
Foals – Edwin
“There’s a guy from Bristol called Peverelist who makes the most amazing rhythmically complex music that has a dancefloor edge but just blows my head off. There’s a new Charlottefield record out and another band called Dananananaykroyd. A weird name, a fucking weird name [Note: it took me a long long time to Google those fuckers]. It’s kind of like Fugazi and Minutemen.”
MGMT
“A Wizard, a True Star by Todd Rundgren, Pacific Ocean Blue by Denis Wilson, Aladdin Sane by David Bowie , Bob Dylan’s Desire as well as two soundtracks from Australian psychedelic surf movies, one called Morning of the Earth, another called Crystal Voyager.”
Holy Fuck – Graham
“A band called The Oscillations. Our drummer Matt is a big Jazz fan so he got me onto some Max Roach, Thelonious Monk. An awesome Ennio Morricone compilation.”
Dan le Sac / Scroobius Pip
Pip – M.I.A – Paper Planes
Dan – Joanna Newsom – Ys
Adele
Vampire Weekend, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Huston.

Yeah its a great way to pick up on artists you haven’t heard of before…same as following the other bands ‘friends’ from artists MySpace page. Came across Joanna Newsom as per Dan Le Sac above but had followed too many links to remember which artist I had started from!
great stuff Niall. Thanks.
i love these lists.
something similar over at cubikmusik with the ‘under the influence with…’ series. Next up is Amanda Blank!

Peverelist = niceness
saw DANANANANAYKROYD last year at the Great Escape festival in Brighton and they were excellent. Only went coz of the name too so you can judge a book by its cover it seems..
