Belfast-based singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside will followup last year’s Nialler9-recommended album Teeth of Time with a new LP to be released March 20th on Nettwerk.
The album was born in the wake of the death of Burnside’s close friend Dean Jendoubi, informed by “loss and the fragile act of continuing” and is his most stripped-back work in his career.
“I wrote and recorded this album after the death of my best friend Dean Jendoubi. He was an incredible person, and I miss him every day. He drifted unawares into the deepest sleep and died of a drug overdose on August 17th last year.
Grief has always been a big part of my music; it’s the reason I started writing songs when I was 13. And so, as I did all those years ago, I reach for the guitar, try a few chords and sing a few words and for a brief moment I feel like it’s going to be okay.”
– Joshua Burnside
‘Something Else’ is the third single from It’s Not Going to be Okay, after recent singles ‘Moon High’ and ‘Nicer Part Of Town’, and is about that grief through the lens of binging The X-Files TV show and wanting to believe in something more fantastical as an escape.
“Last year, I started drinking heavily and binge watching The X-files. There is something so comforting about Mulder and Scully’s relationship. When faced with the cold truth of life and death, it makes you want to believe in something else. That’s kind of what the X-files is really about isn’t it?”
