Justin Strauss is DJing and in conversation in Belfast and Dublin this weekend

The Night Institute and Arveene bring NYC nightlife legend back to the island.

Free talks in Dublin and Belfast lead into club nights at Hang Dai and Ulster Sports Club, as The Night Institute’s Cultural Conversations series expands south of the border for the first time.

The Night Institute and Arveene, supported by Hennessy, are bringing New York DJ and producer Justin Strauss to Ireland this July for a weekend of talks and club nights across Dublin and Belfast.

The visit marks the fourth instalment of The Night Institute’s Cultural Conversations series, and the first time it’s expanded beyond Belfast. Strauss will take part in two free public conversations before headlining club shows in both cities.

The first conversation takes place Friday July 17th at Hen’s Teeth, Dublin, where broadcaster and DJ Kelly-Anne Byrne will host before the Hang Dai set that night with Arveene and Billy Scurry.

The series moves to The Committee Room at Ulster Sports Club, Belfast on Saturday July 18th, hosted by Timmy Stewart as part of The Night Institute’s 11th birthday celebrations. Both talks are free, with advance registration required.

Strauss has spent almost five decades at the centre of New York’s musical and cultural life, from his early years fronting glam-punk band Milk ‘N’ Cookies through to becoming a fixture behind the decks at Mudd Club, The Ritz, Area and Limelight, helping soundtrack downtown Manhattan’s creative scene. As a producer and remixer his credits run from Depeche Mode and Tina Turner to The B-52s, Luther Vandross, Malcolm McLaren, Goldfrapp, Beyoncรฉ and Franz Ferdinand, and he currently holds residencies at The Lot Radio and Gabriela in New York.

Each talk will cover stories from New York’s underground club scene and the cultural movements that shaped it, followed by an extended DJ set from Strauss himself.

DublinFriday July 17th

BelfastSaturday July 18th

Advance tickets for both club nights are on sale now via Resident Advisor and Skiddle, with free registration for the Cultural Conversations available online.
