FKA Twigs has been hinting at new music on her Instagram for some months and last night it materialised with ‘Cellophane‘, her first release in three years.
Last year the singer posted on Instagram that she had undergone surgery to remove six fibroid tumours which are benign growths that can swell to uncomfortable sizes and be very painful, rendering surgery mandatory. She has always been known for her prolific dancing abilities and has been putting clips up of herself gradually gaining her strength back through muscle training on the pole.
‘Cellophane’ is a gorgeous reintroduction to Twigs and what she does best. The instrumentation is minimal, twangy piano lines and ambient whispers accompany her delicate vocal in between sudden synth swells. As her voice soars in the chorus sections it threatens to falter but never does, illustrating that Twigs’ consistently strongest asset is her ability to place herself on the line before folding back into herself.
The music video is equally well executed, showing her Twigs exercising impressive gymnastic skills on a pole in varying flowing outfits and backdrops.
It’s unusual and a little haunting, and we’d have expected nothing less.
