LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy appeared on BBC Radio 1 with Annie Mac to play some tunes and chat.

They discuss how DJing is better when the DJ isn’t the focus (as Despacio does), how he was supposed to co-produce Bowie with Tony Visconti but “got overwhelmed”, how he had an email friendship with David Bowie and how he had planned to do a dancefloor edit of one of his songs but never got around to it before Bowie passed.

Here are the tunes he plays:

Update: gigs and album title also announced.

James Vincent McMorrow’s new album We Move is done and dusted and coming out on September 2nd and with some recent teasing, and a European tour announced including new dates at Black Box, Galway (October 5th) and National Stadium, Dublin (October 7th), James appeared on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio One show tonight to debut the recorded version of ‘Rising Water’ as the Hottest Record In The World.

The song is R&B soul-inspired with new textures in the form of throwback synths, a motorik bassline. McMorrow’s falsetto remains but there’s a refreshing vitality to it.

James told Annie that the song was produced by Nineteen85, who produced Drake records like ‘One Dance’ and ‘Hotline Bling’ along with OVO acts dvsn and Majid Jordan. Production also comes from Two Inch Punch and Frank Dukes.

He also told Annie about how he ended up on a Drake record and how this record is his most direct due to his co-collaborators. Also, nice 3FE cap James.

2. I Lie Awake Every Night
3. Last Story
4. One Thousand Times

Tickets for the Galway show are €30 for members, €32.50 for non-members, and tickets for the Dublin show are €36.50 including booking fee.

BBC Radio One DJ Annie Mac is back in her hometown tonight to play a gig at The Academy in Dublin. It kicks off at 11pm and to get you in the mood for it, I asked Annie for some of her favourite tracks right now and under specific categories…

What’s your favourite track right now?

Jack Garratt – ‘The Love You’re Given’

What song have you’ve been opening DJ sets with?

Paleman – ‘Beezeldub’

Do you have a favourite cheesy Eurodance song?

I always liked that “All that she wants is another baby uh oh uh one…”

(Ace of Base – ‘All That She Wants’)

What’s your go to disco track?

Kool And The Gang – ‘Hollywood Swingers’ [as heard on Rubberbandits’ ‘Bags Of Glue’]

A song that you remember from a good club night recently and why?

Danny Brown – ‘Dip’.

Performed at AMP at Warehouse Project in Manchester last Friday. It was a moment for me.

What’s your favourite remix of the year so far?

Gaaaaah, so many remixes! Most recently I love Jonas Rathsman remix of Sam Smith ‘Like I Can’ and Joakim remix of Kindness Feat Robyn ‘Who Do You Love’:

Do you have a favourite song to wake up to?

I remember once when lived in a bedsit in Manhattan with my friends. My pal Aran put on Lenny Kravitz – ‘Heaven Help’ and I woke up to it. It’s a very beautiful song to wake up to.

Who is an artist you can’t stop listening to?

Spooky Black

A really good sad song?

Johnny Cash – ‘Hurt’

Your first vinyl purchase and what do you remember about it?

A Tribe Called Quest – Beats Rhymes and Life. This is the one I remember the most. I bought it when i lived in NYC for that Summer. I remember listening to ‘1nce Again’ on repeat. I still have it, it’s ruined but I’ve kept all my records that help tell a story of my whereabouts..

A new song guaranteed to get people on the dance floor?

I love DJ Haus’ ‘Coming On’ at the moment. There’s everything I love about dance music in that one.

A track you’ve played that has cleared the dance floor?

I remember playing Rihanna ‘Umbrella’ at a family wedding and it not going down very well. I was very drunk and I’m not sure anyone else was drunk enough.

A song that’s always likely to get played when you DJ?

Cajmere – ‘Percolator’ (Jamie Jones Vault Remix)

An old song you play at DJ sets regularly?

See above! See also: Cajmere – ‘Midnight’, Double 99 – ‘Rip Groove’.

Favourite rapper of the moment?

Novelist is amazing. Super young and super talented.

Song of the year so far?

Caribou – ‘Silver’

A new artist are you most excited about..

Jack Garratt. Rosie Lowe, Lapsley… the list goes on..

Anything Irish that’s been sticking out to you at the moment?

Stephanie Roche’s super goal!!! Obsessed!

I heard this via Annie Mac and her excellent 2 Disc Mix CD Annie Mac Presents which was released a couple of weeks ago. It’s indicative of the new breed of dubstep tunes – all emotional with strains of other electronic music at its core. It’s a bit epic this. Nice one Subscape. Buy the 12″.

Annie Mac plays The Academy this Thursday with Ou Est Le Swimming Pool and another dubstep champion Benga.
