Caroline Polachek has featured a cover of Irish electronic legend Roger Doyle on the deluxe edition of her album Desire, I Want to Turn Into You.
Canadian art pop icon Caroline Polachek dropped the Everasking Edition of Desire on Valentine’s Day last month, the first anniversary of her fourth studio record, after hinting at the release while attending this year’s Grammys in February.
Everasking Edition follows a string of singles and sports eight bonus tracks including a new version of ‘Butterfly Net’ that features Weyes Blood and an acoustic version of ‘I Believe’.
While some bangers were expected on the special edition, a reworking of the 1986 Operating Theatre electronica masterpiece Spring Is Coming With a Strawberry in the Mouth as a track was certainly not on everyone’s bingo card.
Operating Theatre are an Irish experimental theatre group founded in the 80s by composer Roger Doyle, often considered ‘the godfather of Irish electronica’, alongside performer Olwen Fouéré.
Award-winning Irish electronic artist and composer Doyle has had a career spanning decades, working with emerging technologies across a variety of genres to produce his immense body of work.
Appointed a Saoi of Aosdána for his electro-acoustic artistry, Doyle is regarded as one of the most prominent composers in the country and has been an ever-constant figure in theatre and experimental music in Ireland.
Polachek’s cover comes as All City Records announced the re-issue of Doyle’s magnum opus Babel, a project initially released in 1999 after a decade of composition.
Featuring over 100 pieces and almost 50 collaborators, it marks a journey through a virtual tower of Babel, with each piece corresponding to a room within an imagined giant tower city.
Launching in May 2024, the Babel re-release will come as a double vinyl best bits showcase of 80 minutes, with the full six hours available with an individual download code printed on a postcard.
