A couple I missed out on but 7/10 ain’t bad! Good to see Kila get a nod also. Delighted to see my boys in there too of course!
- Adrian Crowley – Long Distance Swimmer
- Cathy Davey – Tales of Silversleeve
- Delorentos – In Love with Detail
- Dry County – Unexpected Falls
- The Flaws – Achieving Vagueness
- Dave Geraghty – Kill your Darlings
- Kila – Gamber’s Ballet
- Roísín Murphy – Overpowered
- Stanley Super 800 – Louder and Clearer
- Super Extra Bonus Party – Super Extra Bonus Party LP
I can’t remember the judges at the moment but UnaRocks was in there! What do you think then? Is Cathy Davey going to run away with it?
Update: Thanks to Sinéad for the list of judges who are:

Pretty good predicting, I’d say!
I stuck up the judges on the blog:

A good list.
Glad Super Extra Bonus Party, Stanley super, delorentos and Kila got on it.
I’d say Cathy will win, with Adrian Crowley and super extra in with a shot. i may put a fiver on.
Overall i think it’s a pretty strong list with no real glaring omissions. I’m particularly pleased for delorentos and the Super Extra Bonus Party nomination is a very welcome, though unsurprising inclusion. The Kila nomination is a surprise, but is good for diversity.
I was listening to the nominations more in hope than expectation myself, after 24 hours of checking the Choice website in the same way that Charlie Bucket checks a Wonka bar. I’ll have to fight it out with Brian McFadden for the title of eleventh best album of the year.
Feel the same as Sinead about Mumblin’ Deaf Ro. Bit surprised also at Hybrasil’s exclusion as too John Hegarty’s. The realist in me says no way for Adrian Crowley winning, so it looks like it’ll be either Delorentos or Cathy Davey, & Cathy Davey seems like the darling of all the Irish media that, you’re right, she could just very well run away with the whole thing.
Future Kings of Spain are a glaring omission…
Delighted for Delorentos, though I’d have been surprised if they didn’t appear. Bit disappointed Dave Geraghty took up someone else’s place, anything I’ve heard has been pretty uninspiring (though I haven’t heard the whole album, so I’m open to correction)
The MDR album should’ve been in there,no question.Personally speaking, there are three nominees that I in no way agree with, but for the sake of common courtesy I’ll keep them to myself. To be honest,I reckon that whoever you think will win, won’t.Neil Hannon last year?!
The Future Kings of Spain album is a rather weak, uninspired, and unoriginal affair notable only for the fact that one of the songs goes on for eight minutes. It came as no surprise to me that it’s not on the list tbh. The major record labels won’t be too happy with the list though, as only two of their acts are on there – Cathy and Roisin. Or are the majors in any way concerned with the Choice when they have the annual feast of ‘fun’ that is the Meteors? After all, as awards ceremonies go, it’s another in a long line of them that nominate major label acts no matter how their atrocious albums fared (viz. Dolores O’Riordan, Andrea Corr, Paddy Casey etc)
Surprised and delighted to see Stanley Super 800 in there – they havent toured the album due to family commitments so it stands on its merits – delighted for the lads!
good list. very happy for all. couple i wouldnt have put in there but more or less how the year went..so who’s the Neil hannon of that list d’ye reckon?
2 out of 3 ain’t bad, so 7 out of 10 is slightly better than that!
how are you on the lotto numbers?
I think it’s a good, fair list that hasn’t included anything offensively undeserving, which is always a nice change in this country.
The more people tip Cathy to run away with it, the less likely it is she’ll get it. I’ll tip Dave Geraghty or Roisin Murphy to be the unlikely recipients. Kila would have had a chance had Hannon not got the “lifetime achievement” style nod last year.
It may be better for Cathy not to win it though. In this day and age (and more importantly, on this little island) winning this prize will surely only speed up the backlash. Seems people don’t even get the chance to enjoy their success before the tide turns these days… and the next thing you know, you’re Paddy Casey.
so who’s the Neil hannon of that list d’ye reckon?
I think it’s a lot more open than Cathy Davey turning up to accept her prize. There are so many factors on the night too between the judges. Obviously, I’d love to see SEBP win as it’s the most unique album on the list. Its clash of styles however probably won’t sit with all the judges.
Adrian Crowley has a very decent chance as does Roísín Murphy but you can’t rule anyone out really.
By the way here are the first odds out on Paddy Power:
Delorentos ‘In Love With Detail’ 2 – 1
Cathy Davey ‘Tales of Silversleeve’ 7 – 2
Roisin Murphy ‘Overpowered’ 4 – 1
The Flaws ‘Achieving Vagueness’ 5 – 1
David Geraghty ‘Kill Your Darlings’ 7 – 1
Adrian Crowley ‘Long Distance Swimmer’ 10 – 1
Stanley Super 800 ‘Louder & Clearer’ 12 – 1
Super Extra bonus party 14 – 1
Kila ‘Gambler’s Ballet’ 16 – 1
Dry County ‘Unexpected Falls’ 20 – 1
There are numerous tempting bets there.
It’s a far more interesting list tha the last couple I think. I am well happy Dry County got nominated as it’s a really good album and like Mjex last year they are the outside runners.
I don’t get (and yes I have tried) Adrian Crowley so known my luck he will win it!
Hey wheres “yatesy and the wall street rip offs” album. A glaring omission!!
Super news for SEBP, i hope delerentos dont win.
Both Kila and SEBP are two of the most diverse exciting music acts in thses shores.
Im going to start off my long ovberdue gambling career with a few bob on the bonus party.
Whens the awards?? Will all these bands be playing Byrno??

The omission of MDR’s album is definitely glaring for me. I’d have it as the winner…. if I believed in music prizes meaning anything.
Suprised (in retrospect) that The Immediate album didn’t win last year.
Gig’s on in Vicar Streeton Wednesday February 27th and will feature performances from as many of the acts who can play on the night . Tickets, priced €27 euro including booking fees, go on sale on Monday next.
I did the same Ciaran, 20 squids on the bonus party just to make it more interesting!
Surprised no-one has mentioned Hooray for Humans – really good skewered pop album that gets under skin on first listen, and definitely second the MDF comments.
Overall though a good list – a marked increase in quality over last years.
