There’s no rest for the CMAT global industry complex (ok, well there was some physical rest at the start of the year), as CMAT powers on from her recent Choice Music Prize win for Irish album of the year, and January’s new song ‘MayDay’.
New song ‘Whatever’s Inconvenient’, marks the gentle liquidation of CMAT 1 era and herald us into CMAT 2.
‘Whatever’s Inconvenient’ is from a FORTHCOMING SECOND ALBUM, a song which relies on Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson’s powerful gliding vocal to deliver the a self-examination, with CMAT asking ““wait, could I be the problem?” (A: probably not).
“Whatever’s Inconvenient is a bit of a mission statement for me (and for my second album). It’s a big question mark over why I am so unendingly bad at entering and maintaining romantic relationships. I don’t really answer the question here, because I can’t and probably never will, but it’s always helpful to acknowledge your own uselessness (I find).”
The song puts CMAT’s vocals to the fore, against the backdrop of piano, strings and drums, and its the soaring melodies that stay with you on ‘Whatever’s Inconvenient’ and trademark CMAT lines like:
“I can always smell it comin
Like the grease upon your mullet”
“Why do I play your greatest hits
Why do I leave myself in bits”
The video was shot in Kos, Greece by Collective Films: and is a lot of fun:
“Whatever’s Inconvenient” was recorded and produced with Bonny Light Horseman’s Josh Kaufman (Cassandra Jenkins, Anais Mitchell) in upstate New York in the US, with additional production and mix by Matias Tellez (Girl in Red) at his studio in Bergen, Norway. It’s accompanied by artwork from London-based artist Seatton – whose work will feature across the new album campaign.

CMAT – Whatever’s Inconvenient Lyrics
I can always smell it comin Like the grease upon your mullet
I knew you’d ruin me the minute
Had a dream and you were in it
Just a dentist, you and i Cuz your crown of boys are mean And it reeks of tobacco to me
I’d make you torso of the week If I still bought heat magazine
And you would pay me not money but praise Cuz I message you all the time
If you’re bored you might reply
I’m your very own hell yes guy
Why do I fall in love and out of love again A needle underneath my skin
Fall in love and out of love again
Whatever’s inconvenient
Fall in love and out of love again My dirty heart and glycerin
Fall in love and out of love again
Whatever’s inconvenient
And I bet you’d buy her ticket on the bus
And I bet she doesn’t know about us
I think Im better off this way cuz im
Worth more the im in pain
So kiss her forehead
And there’ll be no fuss
But you’ll never be Mark E Smith
Cuz your weakness is a bit
I got really caught up in it
Why do I fall in love and out of love again A needle underneath my skin
Fall in love and out of love again
Whatever’s inconvenient
Fall in love and out of love again
My dirty heart and glycerin
Fall in love and out of love again
Whatever’s inconvenient
I’d love you to think I didn’t feel a thing
I wish I could stop myself from hitting the brink
I’m emptying shower gel by bottles every night
Cuz I listen to all your lies
You pretend i’m on your mind
But I’ll never be worth your time
Why do I play your greatest hits
Why do I leave myself in bits
Why do I Fall in love and out of love again
My dirty heart and glycerin
Fall in love and out of love again
Whatever’s inconvenient
I’d love you to think I didn’t feel a thing
I wish I could stop myself from hitting the brink
I’m emptying shower gel by bottles every night
