The Mystery Jets-featuring ‘After Dark’ is the standout of The Count & Sinden’s debut album Mega Mega Mega out on 20th August through Domino. The album takes a melting pot approach to dance music assimilating parts of techno, house, dubstep, electro, bailie funk and more into a whole. ‘After Dark’ is the album’s funky classic dance pop cut. The first half of the album is particularly strong with appearances from Cadence Weapon soundalike Trackademicks, Baltimore’s boisterous Rye Rye and dancehall MC 77Klash. Elsewhere Katy B, Bashy (could be a pop hit that tune) appear and someone called Coolio Inglesias pops up.
The album suffers towards the second half relying on tired and predictable breakdowns until the closer ‘You Make Me Feel So Good’ which gives the album an obligatory downtempo track albeit one expertly gilded in Hyperdub ambience that Joy Orbision would be proud of. Mega Mega Mega was a long time coming and the result is a mixed bag. Still, it’s odd they left off ‘Beeper’ no?
