About the Sevens Series
Creators of multiple independent productions, essential mixes & remixes, influential radio shows and award winning soundtracks, David Holmes, Alexis Taylor and Justin Robertson have all been at the heart of house, techno, soul & rock studios and clubs for 30 years. Having worked with everyone from U2 and Stephen Soderbergh to Noel Gallagher and Bjork, they’re renowned for their depth and breadth of musical knowledge, and their rare ability to bring that knowledge to a dancefloor.
As the front man of legendary UK group Hot Chip, Alexis Taylor is immediately recognisable through his music, be that seminal releases such as ‘Over & Over’ or ‘Ready For The Floor’, any number of the band’s albums – including their most recent Freakout/Release, or one of Alexis’ albums as a solo artist. As a DJ, the music which influenced those records runs through his sets, moving from disco, boogie, electro-pop and house through to techno, dub techno, reggae and soul – always leaning towards vocal-led uplifting music, and always building to a party. Alexis has DJ’d around the world, from Tokyo, Seoul and Bali to Athens, Helsinki, Paris. From Brussels, Naples and Barcelona to New York, LA to London.
A highly regarded DJ, producer and award-winning film composer, whose deep musical knowledge informs every aspect of his work, David Holmes began DJing in Belfast clubs when he was 14 years old. He released his first techno and house singles in the early 90s, before his ambitious first album, This Film’s Crap, Let’s Slash The Seats, introduced the cinematic scope of his production that came to define his style – a style that grew even more evident in the New York-inspired next record, Let’s Get Killed. As David moved into scoring films such as Steve McQueen’s ‘Hunger’, and Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight and Ocean’s Eleven series, he combined the sampling he’d become renowned for in his production, with the pace and rhythms of his releases & compilations, and the keen sense of mood, atmosphere and place honed through decades of club DJing.
Justin Robertson began his journey as a student in Manchester. Attracted by the flourishing musical heritage of the town, he soon fell in love with the emerging machine funk that would become the Acid House scene. Working at the legendary Eastern Bloc records, it wasn’t long before he began to make his mark as a DJ, creating and curating two of the UK’s seminal Balearic House clubs in Spice (with Greg Fenton) and Most Excellent, where the young Chemical Brothers found inspiration. The 90s saw him begin a fruitful remixing career which included tracks for Erasure, Bjork, Happy Mondays, New Order, Talk Talk, Stereo MCs and Felix Da Housecat. His own productions soon took centre stage, and he scored several top 40 hits with his genre-defying Lionrock, touring with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, the Cocteau Twins and Death In Vegas in the process.
With more dates and artists to be announced for later in the year, The Commercial welcomes Alexis, Justin and David to the Record Room basement as the first of a series of shows inviting a range of favourite producers, DJs, musicians and speakers back to Limerick, or to the city for the first time.
