Fancy a Hip-Hop supergroup?
It feels like an age since age since a good album came out from under the Quannum umbrella. Blackalicious, Lateef, Lyrics Born are all great artists who have been superceded by the flashiness of Lil Wayne and Kanye and his subsequent 808 heartbreak. The latest release from the Solesides camp uses the combined powers of the above along with some famous friends. The Mighty Underdogs are Gift of Gab from Blackalicious and Lateef of Latyrx & producer Headnodic with appearances from MF Doom, DJ Shadow, Mr Lif, Chali 2na, The Alkoholik’s Tash, Casual and Damian and Julian Marley.
The Mighty Underdogs album Droppin’ Science Fiction doesn’t match the freshness of similar artists in their sphere of hip-hop (hello, Shape of Broad Minds) but it is a step away from irrelevancy. At the very least, these dudes are actually making a record again. Some of the album is hampered by superficial and generic lyricisms but there is some great stuff here but mostly it involves the special guests. This is 98 hip-hop updated for 08 and not much has changed and that’s OK with me.
