The Fight Like Apes singer has long guested on other people’s records.
From her time singing with Le Galaxie to regular collaborations with Jerry Fish Mik Pyro and Elaine Mai, MayKay has regularly kept up her singing personality on record and live, as well as developing her hosting duty skills on Other Voices for the last 10 years.
Today marks the day that Maykay releases her debut solo single ‘Busted’ on her own label Grainstore, since the release of last year’s Sinead O’Connor cover to raise funds for Palestine.
The song is directly slung hook at her experiences with male misogyny with Maykay saying:
“Be honest with yourselves and more importantly, with your boys. Talk to your boys. Please.
People with bad intentions will always try to complicate the issue of consent. But it’s not complicated. Do you want women to trust you or not?”
The song’s vibey tense-filled tongue-in-cheek production was kickstarted when MayKay saw Dublin musician and pal Ian McFarlane (Squarehead, Tieranniesaur, Cruel Sister, Mik Pyro, Anamoe Drive) playing lap steel on Instagram.
“That moment unlocked all this music for me,” she says. “This finally sounds like me.”
A full album is to on October 10th. Pre-order.
