New music: Joey Bada$$, Fossil Collective, DrDr & Vaz
Every Friday, I pick out four new music picks from the best of music blogs worldwide as part of my Day & Night digital section. Follow Day & Night on Twitter or Facebook. The magazine is out today in print with every copy of the Irish Independent so pick it up to see my full section as well as the rest of the mag. My picks for the this week are…
Joey Bada$$
This young Brooklyn rapper is only 17 years old has been compared to Nas and A Tribe Called Quest and there’s certainly a classic hip-hop element to his rap style and sample-laden tracks. Get his 1999 mixtape for an old-school lesson from the new kid.
Fossil Collective
Heart-swelling harmonic folk music from a Leeds duo David Fendick and Jonny Hooker on their debut EP Let It Go which recalls the likes of James Vincent McMorrow and Midlake.
DrDr
Brighton’s DrDr impressed bloggers with their cover of Major Lazer’s Get Free but their own track Addicted is a fine cut of original electronic R&B.
Vaz
The Swedes are the pop juice again. Jenny & Cecilia Vaz make up this sister duo and if we’re sticking to national comparisons, their music thus far, is a cross between Lykke Li and Niki & The Dove.
